August 10 – August 15

The Dominican Diaspora converged in New York City for the annual Dominican Day Parade on Sunday, August 9th. Since 1982, the Parade has been bringing Dominicans together to revel and celebrate their Dominican identity. In many ways, the Parade begins and ends Uptown as La Marina has become the starting point for the parade with their pre-Dominican Day Parade breakfast/event and after the parade is over almost everyone comes Uptown to continue the party. Check out our awesome pictures of the festivities courtesy of Marcus Johnson.

Do you know what the Perseid meteor shower is? Well, it is a cosmic light show made up of molten debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet and our beloved Inwood Hill Park was a prime location for catching it. Stargazers from all over the city came Uptown to take in the celestial illuminations.

We have been talking a lot around here about the inexorable rise of commercial rents. One of the fixtures of Uptown life that seems to be destined for extinction is the bodega. The number of bodegas in New York City has been declining rapidly. Carmen Molina Tamacas of El Diario/La Prensa penned an excellent article on the legacy of the Dominican bodega.

Everybody is buzzing about Lin-Manuel Miranda’s latest masterpiece, Hamilton. The show swiftly went from a super successful run at the Public Theater to a much-ballyhooed Broadway one. President Barack Obama, Samuel L. Jackson and Jennifer López are just a few of the big names that have seen the next-generation production. Our good friend and professor and historian, Robert W. Snyder wrote a great review of the musical. By the way, make sure you pick up his must-read history of Washington Heights, Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York City.

Finding the right moving company is not an easy task. Make the wrong decision and you could end up with the absolutely wrong moving company. In their latest video, the good folks at Room 28 illustrate just how bad that wrong moving company can be.

The Grant Wilfley Casting Company is looking for background actors for the new Netflix series called The Get Down, directed by Academy Award Nominee Baz Luhrmann. It’s set in the Bronx and is about the birth of hip-hop in the 1970’s. Go to our site for more info.
