The Dominican Day Parade has traditionally been celebrated on the second Sunday of August in honor of “La Guerra de la Restauración” [The War of the Restoration].
While that battle for the nation’s independence from Spain was waged from 1863 to1865, this year, the sense of reinstatement – and victory – resounded loudly through the canyon of the Avenue of the Americas.
After a tumultuous start earlier this year in which the previous administration had been ousted by the State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a new board of directors was installed.
They faced daunting challenges, all in short order.
In less than six months, the newly constituted board would tend to staging the largest celebration of Dominican and Dominican-American heritage in the country.
There were the logistics and execution of the parade itself, to which thousands flock to every year.
There was also a week filled with events and programs prior to the parade; these included a formal banquet gala; countless media interviews; an official reception hosted by the Mayor and First Lady; pre-parade breakfasts; and the establishment of a $250,000 academic scholarship fund.
And so, they set out and made their way forward.
The morning of Sun., Aug. 9th broke bright and balmy, the perfect setting for a rebirth.

El Desfile del Día Dominicano tradicionalmente se celebra el segundo domingo de agosto en honor a “La Guerra de la Restauración”.
Mientras que la batalla por la independencia de España se libró de 1863 a 1865, este año, el sentido de restablecimiento -y la victoria- resonaron fuertemente a través del cañón de la avenida de las Américas.
Después de un tumultuoso comienzo en el que la administración anterior fue derrocada por el fiscal general estatal Eric Schneiderman, se instaló un nuevo consejo de administración.
Se enfrentaron a enormes desafíos en el corto plazo.
En menos de seis meses, la recién constituida junta buscaría preparar la más grande celebración de la herencia dominicana y dominicana-estadounidense.
Estaba la logística y la ejecución del desfile, al que acuden miles todos los años.
También fue una semana llena de eventos y programas previos al desfile, incluyendo un banquete formal de gala, innumerables entrevistas con los medios, una recepción ofrecida por el alcalde y la primera dama, desayunos previos al desfile y la creación de un fondo de becas académicas por $250,000 dólares.
Y así lo hicieron.
La mañana del domingo 9 de agosto estalló luminosa y cálida, el escenario perfecto para un renacimiento.
