DAY CARE
The Washington Heights Day Care Center stands to close its doors after 41 years caring for children on West 175th Street.

"The zip code is wiped out."

The doomsday prediction was not the utterance of an actor in one of the many summer action blockbusters in theaters now, but was spoken with no less gravity.

"The 10033 zip code is wiped out," explained Nereida Hill, Executive Director of the Washington Heights Day Care Center, located on 175th Street between Broadway and St. Nicholas Avenue.

Hill was referring what amounts to an eradication of most of the early childhood education programs in the 10033 zip code.

"El código postal se borró".

La predicción del juicio final no era la declaración de un actor en uno de los muchos éxitos de taquilla del verano ahora en teatros, pero no fue hablado con menos gravedad.

"El código postal 10033 fue borrado", explicó Nereida Hill, Directora Ejecutiva del Centro de Cuidado Diurno Washington Heights, localizado en la Calle 175 entre Broadway y la Avenida St. Nicholas.

“Don’t Fry” Day – Be SunWise Print E-mail
Wednesday, May 23, 2012

As summer quickly approaches, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has joined the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Park Service (NPS) to emphasize the dangers of skin cancer and has provided simple steps Americans can take to protect themselves.

The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention designated the Friday before Memorial Day "Don't Fry Day" as a way to highlight sun safety.

"Skin cancer prevention and sun safety are important issues for EPA – our primary mission is to protect people's health and the environment," said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation. "While the agency has made steady progress protecting the Earth's ozone layer, the SunWise program and Don't Fry Day help teach children and families simple steps to stay safe in the sun and protect themselves from harmful UV rays."

Recalling a life lived in history
Dr. Eugene Callendar, Harlem minister, educator and community activist, has written a memoir, "Nobody is a Nobody," detailing the life and history of his 86 years.

Dr. Eugene S. Callender has got a story to tell.

A number of them, actually.

One would expect no less from a man who has served as a minister, a community activist, a social worker, a political and civil rights leader and an educator.

Callender has also served in five presidential commissions.

The 86-year-old clergyman recalls a number of these experiences, anecdotes and lessons in his new memoir "Nobody Is a Nobody: The Story of a Harlem Ministry Hard at Work to Change America".

Thespis
This theater space at Mother Cabrini High School will serve as home to a new theater festival uptown.

The Thespis Theatre Festival aims to have a dramatic impact on the neighborhood.

And why shouldn't it?

Its namesake, after all, is the inventor of tragedy; "thespian," another word for actor, comes from Thespis' name.

The Thespis Theatre Festival, slated to run from August through September, will showcase 40 first-run plays.
