SUMMER 2015 WALKING TOURS
Washington Heights and Inwood (WAHI) are communities that have, over the past few years, gained recognition in massive demographic changes. People from other parts of the city are visiting and moving here because of affordable housing, historical sites and beautiful parks. These tours will provide the visitor and resident alike a better prospective of northern Manhattan and what it has to offer.
JUMEL TERRACE HISTORIC DISTRICT and SUGAR HILL is noted for the Morris-Jumel Mansion which was used as a headquarters by General George Washington in the autumn of 1776 during the Battle for New York at the beginning of the American Revolution. Sylvan Terrace is a series of 2-story row houses built in the 1880’s. Another stop on the tour is 555 Edgecombe Avenue where famous African-American personalities such as Paul Robeson, Canada Lee, Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, Count Basie and Duke Ellington had lived. The area is home to a local bookstore, art gallery and the Washington Heights branch of the New York Public Library. Nearby Coogan’s Bluff is where baseball fans watched the New York Giants play at the Polo Grounds at 155th Street. There is an admission fee to the Morris Jumel Mansion; $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and students.

MEET: In front of the Morris-Jumel Mansion Jumel Terrace and 160th Street
FORT WASHINGTON-HUDSON HEIGHTS TOUR combines local history and real estate. The Battle of Fort Washington will be discussed at Bennett Park on Fort Washington Avenue and 184th Street where the last major battle of New York City was fought during the American Revolution. Hudson Heights is a real estate term used today by local realty companies to promote the neighborhood. Afterwards, other sites will include the estates of James Gordon Bennett, Dr. Charles Paterno, Lucius Chittenden, Augustus C. Richards and C.K.G. Billings will be visited and discussed. The Shrine of Mother Francesca Xavier Cabrini will also be visited as well.

MEET: Northwest corner of 181st Street and Fort Washington Avenue
AUDUBON PARK (155th – 158th Broadway to the Hudson River) was home of naturalist and artist John James Audubon and conservationist George Bird Grinnell founder of the Audubon Society. It has been designated a Historic District on May 12, 2009 by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Audubon’s grave at Trinity Cemetery and Mausoleums and the Audubon Terrace Museum Complex are some of the many stops included on the tour.

MEET: At the triangle at 157th Street and Broadway
TRINITY CHURCH CEMETERY and MAUSOLEUMS (153rd to 155th and Broadway) was opened in 1842 to provide additional cemetery space to an already overcrowded lower Manhattan. This cemetery includes many of New York’s social elite such as the Astor’s and the Schermerhorn’s. Many of northern Manhattan’s local residents are interred here too such as naturalist John James Audubon and adventuress Madam Eliza Jumel. There are four former Mayors of New York City buried at the cemetery, one of them is Edward I. Koch. In December the tour will include the Clement Clarke Moore Candlelight Commemoration held at the Church of the Intercession as part of its Christmas celebrations. Moore and his family are buried in the western division of the cemetery and the grave is visited after the ceremony for a gravesite mass and Christmas Carols.
