UC Recap – August 6 – August 11

 August 6 – August 11

As many of you are already aware, the City Council voted 43-1 (with one abstention) to approve the Inwood Rezoning plan. The fight, however, is far from over. Almost immediately, Congressman Adriano Espaillat, who has vehemently opposed the plan as it stands now, stated via Twitter: “Today members of the ‪#NYC Council failed the ‪#Inwood community and residents. ‪#InwoodRezoning ‪#OurVoices deserve to be heard and I stand ready to join any forthcoming lawsuit to fight to keep this plan from moving forward. ‪#NY13.” The struggle for the future of this community has entered another stage and you can bet The Manhattan Times and the Uptown Collective will be there to document what comes next. Please make sure you follow The Manhattan Times on Social Media for up-to-the-minute coverage of everything Uptown; the handle for both Twitter and IG is @ManhattanTimes.

Listen up, folks; HBO Presents the New York Latino Film Festival goes down August 22 through the 26. You need to hit up www.nylatinofilmfestival.com to get your tickets ASAP before they are all gone. I’m talking outstanding films from across the globe that you may never get to see elsewhere. Kicking off the festival is the Futuro Digital Conference, which is presented by Google and features conversations from top thought-leaders, executives, and influencers in the digital space.

Wednesday, August 15 is your last chance to partake of Uptown Bounce 2018. These awesome weekly block parties thrown by El Museo del Barrio and the Museum of the City of New York are serious fun for the entire family.

The indispensable Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) has two calls for artists right now. The first is for submissions for outdoor art installations at Inwood Hill Park. The deadline is August 24 and the two winning proposals will receive a stipend of $1,300. The other is for another NoMAA collaboration with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The deadline for that one is September 10 and includes a $400 stipend for the four selected artists.
