Insurance provider WellCare of New York threw open the doors to its newest “Welcome Room” this past Mon., May 16th. Located at St. Nicholas Avenue and 179th Street, the site was host to dozens of WellCare administrators and staff, community residents and leaders who gathered for a festive morning with balloons and the group’s blue bear mascot to mark the occasion. Timothy Tapia, Director of Community Outreach for Public Advocate Letitia “Tish” James, lauded the organization for opening its latest site uptown in Washington Heights, and a citation from the office of Assemblymember Keith Wright was also presented. “We are grateful for the opportunity to extend our services to the uptown community,” said Marketing Manager Pedro Placencio. WellCare provides government-sponsored health care to those with Medicaid, Medicare and prescription drug plans. By its own analysis, the company serves approximately 118,000 Medicaid members, 41,000 Medicare Advantage members, 55,000 Medicare Prescription Drug Plan members and 7,000 Managed Long Term Care members in New York alone. The facility is the eleventh Welcome Room in the state, and is intended as a community resource for those seeking information and assistance on health insurance options, specifically Medicaid and Medicare. The center will also be a destination and gathering place that will offer wellness workshops and services. Some topics to be explored include exercise, preventive health, and disease management. Programs will be free and open to the public. “This center will offer more access [for] the healthcare needs of Washington Heights,” said Market Vice President Ryan Fogarty, adding that healthy cooking and exercise would be primary areas of focus. Those were topics near and dear to one special guest – New York Mets catcher René Rivera, who helped cut the site’s ribbon and held court with fans during an autograph and meet-and-greet session. The veteran Major Leaguer originally from Bayamón, Puerto Rico said it was important to spend time giving back. “The fans come out and support us every day,” said Rivera. “It’s great when we as players have an opportunity to come out to support them with their needs.” The partnership between WellCare and the New York Mets is an ongoing collaboration, which also includes Junior Baseball Clinics, during which at-risk youths aged 8-14 are provided with skills training and an opportunity to engage Major League players for a day. “It’s wonderful to have this [here],” said one guest. “Our members are our reason for being,” said Fogarty. “It is our goal to help [everyone] lead better and healthier lives. El sitio ubicado en la avenida St. Nicholas y la calle 179, recibió a docenas de administradores, residentes, líderes de la comunidad y personal de WellCare, quienes se reunieron para una mañana de fiesta para celebrar la ocasión. La asociación entre WellCare y los Mets de Nueva York es una colaboración continua que también incluye clínicas de béisbol junior, durante las cuales los jóvenes en riesgo de edades entre 8 y 14 años reciben capacitación y la oportunidad de convivir con jugadores de Grandes Ligas durante un día. “Es maravilloso tener esto”, dijo uno de los invitados. “Nuestros miembros son nuestra razón de ser”, dijo Fogarty. “Es nuestra meta ayudar [a todos] a llevar una vida mejor y más saludable.
