Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) has announced the launch of its new Volunteer Program. The organization is based at East 121st Street and services over 56,000 individuals annually.
Founded in 1979, CUCS seeks to develop affordable housing and provides integrated programs that link housing, health and social services for New York’s homeless and most vulnerable people.
Here is a short Q and A with Volunteer Coordinator Grace, who is spearheading the program and will organize volunteer events.
What made you want to work with volunteers?
When I was in college, I did a lot of work with underserved high school students navigating the college application process. I enjoyed seeing the impact my work had and became the leader of the group to get more involved. In this role, I organized all the college volunteers while working with students myself. I learned that people are really excited and motivated by volunteering. This experience helped me decide to continue working with volunteers and explore working in the nonprofit industry after graduation.
How long have you been working as the Volunteer Coordinator?
I started as CUCS’s first ever Volunteer Coordinator in November 2017. We [have] established a strategy to cultivate volunteers, created a webpage and handbook for the program, and hammered out all of the legal and logistical requirements involved with having volunteers. I also traveled our program sites to meet with program directors to determine where they saw a need for the volunteers the new program would bring in. There were so many different aspects to work through so the process was really interesting and fun.
What are you most excited about as the program takes shape?
I am excited by how much potential there is for this program to develop. Our programs are genuinely excited to have volunteers work to help make their clients feel safe and at home. Each has unique needs so there are many possible projects volunteer groups can work on. These include resume and interview workshops, beautification projects, outdoor game days and art classes, and meal serving at summer barbeques and holiday events.

We have this great opportunity to shape the Volunteer Program and make it something that will have a lasting impact on our clients, programs and volunteers themselves. It will be exciting to see how everything unfolds.
Why do you think it is important for people to volunteer?
I think volunteering allows people to really connect to their communities, meet new people, and learn about issues that may be a bit hidden to them otherwise. It is also a great way to demonstrate to the community that you care. Volunteering shows that building brighter futures is a project we are all responsible for and all grow from participating in. I have loved seeing how beneficial volunteering can be both to the volunteers and the people they are serving.

¿Qué te hizo querer trabajar con voluntarios?
Cuando estaba en la universidad, trabajé mucho con estudiantes desfavorecidos de preparatoria que navegaban por el proceso de solicitud a la universidad. Disfruté al ver el impacto que tuvo mi trabajo y me convertí en el líder del grupo para involucrarme más. En esta función, organicé a todos los voluntarios de la universidad mientras trabajaba con los alumnos. Aprendí que la gente realmente se emociona y se siente motivada por el voluntariado. Esta experiencia me ayudó a decidir continuar trabajando con voluntarios y a explorar el trabajo en la industria sin fines de lucro después de graduarme.
¿Cuánto tiempo llevas trabajando como coordinadora de Voluntarios?
Comencé siendo la primera coordinadora de voluntarios de CUCS en noviembre de 2017. Establecimos una estrategia para cultivar voluntarios, creamos una página web y un manual para el programa y lidiamos con todos los requisitos legales y logísticos necesarios para contar con voluntarios. También viajé por los sitios de los programas para reunirme con los directores y determinar dónde veían la necesidad de los voluntarios que aportaría el nuevo programa. Hubo muchos aspectos diferentes para trabajar, por lo que el proceso fue realmente interesante y divertido.
¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma a medida que el programa toma forma?
Estoy entusiasmada con el potencial que hay para desarrollar este programa. Nuestros programas están realmente emocionados de tener voluntarios trabajando para ayudar a que sus clientes se sientan seguros y en casa. Cada uno tiene necesidades únicas, por lo que hay muchos proyectos posibles en los que los grupos de voluntarios pueden trabajar. Estos incluyen talleres de CV y entrevista, proyectos de embellecimiento, días de juegos al aire libre y clases de arte, y servir comidas en barbacoas de verano y eventos festivos.
Tenemos esta gran oportunidad de dar forma al Programa de Voluntarios y convertirlo en algo que tenga un impacto duradero en nuestros clientes, programas y los voluntarios mismos. Será emocionante ver cómo se desarrolla todo.
¿Por qué crees que es importante que las personas sean voluntarias?

Creo que el voluntariado les permite a las personas conectarse realmente con sus comunidades, conocer gente nueva y aprender sobre temas que, de otro modo, podrían estar un poco ocultos para ellas. También es una excelente manera de demostrar a la comunidad que te importa. El voluntariado muestra que la construcción de futuros más brillantes es un proyecto del que todos somos responsables y todos crecen a partir de la participación. Me ha encantado ver cuán beneficioso puede ser el voluntariado tanto para los voluntarios como para las personas a las que sirven.
