August 13 – August 18
For my birthday, which was on August 13, my wife treated me to a simply sublime dinner at Republica (160 Dyckman St). I had been waiting to try this spot since it opened up almost a year ago. Boy, they did not disappoint. First of all, the place is gorgeous. The establishment boasts three floors with their own distinct flavor, style and menu. The first floor is their dining room, the second floor is a lounge and the third floor is an incredible roof deck. Now let’s get to the food. Our first course was a truly divine appetizer, the shrimp ceviche, which comes with guacamole and plantain flakes. My main course was a cooked to perfection churrasco steak. My wife ordered the shrimp mofongo, which was another outstanding dish. I almost forgot the cocktails. My wife and I both had the hilariously named jablador, which consists of Brujal anejo, passion fruit, lime juice, sugar, grenadine, simple syrup, orange and cherries. Hit them up ASAP and tell them the Uptown Collective sent you.
Even though the Inwood rezoning was approved by the City Council, a significant contingent of people, including many local elected officials, are concerned still about the plan’s potential to change the make up of this neighborhood forever. Local writer John Paul Infante returned with a highly personal take on the rezoning and how he thinks it will irrevocably alter the neighborhood that his daughter will grow up in.
