“The doctor will see you now”

ABC series captures local hospital drama

Now, on Tuesday night, anyone can pull up a chair and visit with one of the many top-rated doctors or nurses at the Columbia and Weill Cornell campuses of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, thanks to “NY Med,” the new eight-part documentary series on ABC-TV.

Described by some as a real-life “Grey’s Anatomy,” the series, as created by veteran television producer Terence Wrong, documents some of the high drama and intimate moments that abound in the hospital’s corridors.

This past Tues., July 10^th, local residents and many members of the hospital’s staff, many wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the show’s logo, gathered just a few blocks away from the hospital, at Coogan’s Restaurant, for a special premiere party.

The first episode did not disappoint, chronicling the intense trials of a young mom with a brain tumor and its removal and featuring the restoration of an older man’s heart valve by Dr. Mehmet Oz.

From the rapturous response of the audience assembled at Coogan’s, “NY Med,” with its tales of the different doctors and nurses at the hospital, is a hit.

“I thought the show was excellent,” said Modesto Gomez, an anesthesia technician at NewYork-Presbyterian. “I know a lot of the doctors in the show because I work in the operation room. I was very proud of them. Just seeing them up there and seeing them do what they do is a wonderful feeling.”

Community residents were also excited to see a bit more of the behind-the-scenes.
“I loved this show, because it makes you appreciate being healthy and having all this medical care available to us in the neighborhood,” said Washington Heights resident Sissy Genkova.  “It puts a face on the doctors taking care of patients.”

Seasoned medical professionals were also taken with the show.

“It was wonderful. I loved the section on brain tumors,” said Meg Geer, former pediatric neuroscience department employee at Le Bonner Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee and Washington Heights resident. “I thought the show was very moving and pretty realistic.”

Helen Morik, the hospital’s Vice President for Government and Community Affairs, said she was glad that others would be privy to what she says is her everyday experience.

“Because I work at NY Presbyterian, and because I know what we do, just to know that people across the country are seeing what we do makes me proud,” she said.  “I think this shows the humanity of the doctors. They really do care, they really connect and that’s very evident.”

“NYMed” airs on Tuesday nights at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.

Nuevo show captura el drama del hospital

Los doctores están haciendo llamadas de casa.

Ahora cualquier persona puede hacerse una visita con uno de los muchos doctores y enfermeras de los dos recintos del hospital NewYork-Presbyterian,  Cornell Weill y Columbia gracias a “NY Med,” la serie documental en la cadena ABC-TV.

El nuevo show de la cadena ABC, “NYMed” está siendo descrito como un “Grey’s Anatomy” de la vida real en el hospital principal de Washington Heights.

“NY Med” documenta las diarias situaciones tras bastidores en el Columbia University Medical Center, en la calle 168 y el Weill Cornell Medical Center en el Upper East Side.

El pasado martes, 10 de julio, durante una fiesta de estreno del show en Coogan’s, empleados del hospital y residentes en el vecindario se cobijaron para un primer vistazo del show.

Documentando las vicisitudes de una joven madre con un tumor cerebral y la remoción de este, la restauración de una válvula del corazón de un hombre de edad mayor, por parte de Oprah, su colega y estrella de la televisión matutina el Dr. Oz, y los cuentos de los diferentes doctores y enfermeras quienes a diario salvan vidas en el hospital, el show resultó un éxito.

“Yo pensé que el show fue excelente, yo conozco a muchos de los doctores en el show porque yo trabajo en la sala de cirugía y me sentí muy orgulloso de ellos”, dijo Modesto Gómez, un técnico anestesista en el New York Presbyterian.

“Tan solo viéndoles allí y verles hacer lo que hacen es una maravillosa sensación”, agrego él.

Los residentes de la comunidad se sintieron emocionados de las líneas argumentales de los doctores  y las enfermeras, con las cuales ellos normalmente hubiesen tenido muy poca relación.

“Me encantó este show porque le hace a uno apreciar el estar en salud y tener todo esta atención médica disponible para nosotros en el vecindario”, dijo la residente de Washington Heights Sissy Genkova. “Le pone rostro a los doctores quienes trabajan día y noche, cuidando a los pacientes”, agrego ella.

“Yo pensé que el show estuvo maravilloso, me encantó la sección de los tumores cerebrales”, dijo Meg Geer, antigua empleada del departamento de neurociencia pediátrica en el Le Bonner Children’s Hospital en Memphis Tennessee y quien reside en Washington Heights. “Yo pensé que el show fue muy emotivo y bastante realista”, agregó ella.

La respuesta al show fue positiva, aquellos quienes trabajan en el hospital se sintieron orgullosos y aquellos que residen en el vecindario se sintieron igualmente orgullosos. La mayoría de los espectadores se enamoraron de los doctores y las enfermeras destacados en el show.

“Porque laboro en el NY Presbyterian y me siento tan orgullosa del hospital, porque sé lo que hacemos y sólo con saber que la gente de todo el país está viendo lo que hacemos”, dijo Helen Morik, vice-presidente de asuntos Gubernamentales y Comunitarios del hospital Presbyterian. “Una de las ventajas de este show lo es que la gente en la comunidad se sentirá muy orgullosa”, agregó ella.

“Yo pienso que esto demuestra lo humanitario de los doctores, ellos realmente tienen mucha humanidad y realmente se preocupan, ellos conectan realmente y esto se evidencia en el primer show”.
