Storm brings waterworks

She was in tears throughout the night.
Not toddler Emma Lucia, but her mother, People’s Theatre Project Founder and Co-Executive Producer Mino Lora.
She had good reason.
“The night truly was a celebration, not only of our sixth season of work, but of our community,” she explained.
The waterworks came on Tues., Jun. 16th when Lora and other members of the theater company, together with independent performance artist Michael (Juan Bago) Díaz, hosted the group’s annual benefit, “The People Storm the Palace.”
The evening featured selected performances from over 70 of the company’s community actors, who range in age from 6 to 75. The presentations, which included original songs, poetry and dance, touched on a host of issues including gentrification, bullying, domestic violence, sexism, and climate change, among others.
Actress Zabruna Guevara was recognized with the “INSPIRACION” award, and local school principal Monica Klehr was honored with the “IMPACTO” award.
A highlight of the evening was when Brailinson Disla, a PTP and Harbor Heights Middle School alum spoke of the genuine impact his former middle school principal had had on his life.
In his remarks, he acknowledged how challenging a seventh grader he had been six years ago. He was recently arrived from the Dominican Republic, he recalled, and his transition to his new life and school was difficult. From the stage, he thanked Klehr for her tough love, for the many calls home, and for even the frequent stays in detention. He credited her guidance for keeping him on the right path – one he would continue while at Gregorio Luperón High School, from which he had just graduated.
He finished by announcing that he had been accepted and would be attending the Ivy League’s University of Pennsylvania in the fall on a full scholarship, in pursuit of a dual degree in Physics and Computer Science.
“That moment brought the house down,” recalled Lora.
And the tears.

Ella lloró durante toda la noche.
No la pequeña Emma Lucía, sino su madre, la fundadora del Proyecto de Teatro del Pueblo, y el coproductor ejecutivo Mino Lora.
Tenían una buena razón.
“La noche fue realmente una celebración, no sólo por nuestra sexta temporada de trabajo, sino por nuestra comunidad”, explicó.
Los lagrimones llegaron el martes 16 de junio, cuando Lora y otros miembros de la compañía de teatro, junto con el artista de performance independiente Michael (Juan Bago) Díaz, organizaron el evento benéfico anual del grupo, “The People Storm the Palace”.
La velada contó con actuaciones seleccionadas de más de 70 de los actores comunitarios de la compañía, con edades de 6 a 75 años. Las presentaciones incluyeron canciones originales, poesía y danza, abordaron una serie de temas, como el aburguesamiento, la intimidación, la violencia doméstica, el sexismo y el cambio climático, entre otros.
La actriz Zabryna Guevara fue reconocida con el premio “INSPIRACIÓN”, y la directora de la escuela local, Mónica Klehr, fue honrada con el premio “IMPACTO”.
Un punto culminante de la noche fue cuando Brailinson Disla, PTP y ex estudiante de la secundaria Harbor Heights, habló del impacto genuino que su ex directora de la escuela secundaria tuvo en su vida.
En su discurso, reconoció el difícil estudiante de séptimo grado que fue hace seis años. Él había llegado recientemente de la República Dominicana, recordó, y su transición a su nueva vida y escuela fue difícil. Desde el escenario, agradeció a Klehr por su amor duro, por las muchas llamadas a casa, e incluso las frecuentes estancias en detención. Él atribuye a la dirección de Klehr el haberse mantenido en el camino correcto, uno que continuó hasta la preparatoria Gregorio Luperón, de la que acaba de graduarse.
Terminó anunciando que ha sido aceptado, y asistirá, a la Universidad de Pennsylvania, una Ivy League, en el otoño con una beca completa, buscando un doble grado en Física y Ciencias de la Computación.
“Ese momento enloqueció a la audiencia”, recordó Lora.
Y provocó lágrimas.
