Blue Nights
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine will host a dramatic reading of Joan Didion’s memoir Blue Nights, a follow up to her National Book Award-winning The Year of Magical Thinking. Blue Nights will be performed by acclaimed actress Vanessa Redgrave in Didion’s prose. Guest artist Jimmy Owens, 2012 NEA Jazz Master and leader of Jimmy Owens Plus, will take part in the program on the trumpet-flugelhorn.
The reading, which will take place on Mon., Nov.17th at 8:00 p.m., will be a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Cathedral Community Cares.

The cultural group Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21) will celebrate November’s Puerto Rican Heritage Month with educational performances for schools, students, teachers and other guests.
At the Julia de Burgos Cultural Center, participants will witness energetic performances, learn about the musical traditions of bomba and plena and interact with musicians on the stage. The event will take place on Fri., Nov. 21st, and is open to all. Each session runs 55 minutes long, is offered in bilingual Spanish/English and always ends in a Q&A session with the artists. Two sessions will be held back to back. The first one will be held at 10:00 a.m. and the second one will be held at 12:00 p.m. The Julia de Burgos Cultural Center is located at 1680 Lexington Avenue.

Caring for People Living with Alzheimer’s
Head to the Harlem Hospital Center on Sat., Nov. 15th for a symposium on community resources and information for Alzheimer’s caregivers, families and people living with dementia. The talk will feature Dr. James M. Noble, MD, MS from the Department of Neurology Columbia University Medical, and is presented by the Smaltz Foundation, in partnership with Harlem Hospital Center. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the symposium begins at 9:00 a.m.
This event will take place at the Harlem Hospital Center at 506 Lenox Avenue at 135th Street inside the Herbert Cave Auditorium.

Meet The Filmmakers at Word Up
On Wed., Nov. 13th at 7:00 p.m. Jon Ullman and Led Black will discuss their upcoming documentary feature film, Nutcracker Inc, and preview selected clips at Word Up Community Book Shop. Nutcracker Inc. tells the story of the enigmatic and elusive drink. The film explores the history of the street drink and delves into its relationship with the Washington Heights neighborhood that made it famous. El grupo cultural Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21) celebrará en noviembre el Mes de la Herencia Puertorriqueña con actuaciones educativas para escuelas, estudiantes, profesores y otros invitados.
En el Centro Cultural Julia de Burgos, los participantes serán testigos de actuaciones enérgicas, aprenderán acerca de las tradiciones musicales de la bomba y la plena e interactuarán con los músicos en el escenario. El evento tendrá lugar el viernes 21 de noviembre y está abierto a todo el público. Cada sesión dura 55 minutos, se ofrece en español e inglés y siempre termina con una ronda de preguntas y respuestas con los artistas. Dos sesiones se celebrarán consecutivamente: la primera a las 10:00 am y la segunda a las 12:00 pm. El Centro Cultural Julia de Burgos se encuentra en el 1680 de la avenida Lexington.
