Her father, Alberto Martinez León, has been missing for nearly two weeks. “It’s frustrating, as each day goes by and we still don’t know where he is,” she remarked. Alberto, 48, a Bronx resident, was last seen on July 26 in East Harlem, where he attended a family barbecue in Thomas Jefferson Park. After visiting the park, Alberto went to Costco to purchase food for his home, Kay said, then stopped briefly at her aunt’s First Avenue apartment around 6 p.m. “He told my aunt he was going home and said, ‘I’ll see you later,’” said Kay. Alberto León has not been seen since. After leaving East Harlem, it is believed that Alberto made his way back to the Bronx, to his apartment at 941 Leggett Avenue, which he shares with Kay and her younger sister Leslie. “We know that he did make it home, because my sister saw the food in the fridge the he bought at Costco,” explained Kay. Daughter Leslie sent a text message to her dad at 9:43 p.m. on the evening of July 26, informing her that she was at the park, and Alberto responded “OK, be careful” at 9:46 p.m. — that was the last contact anyone has had with him. The family was initially unaware that anything unusual was happening with Alberto. When the daughters returned home that evening and failed to see their dad, they thought he was in his room asleep, Kay said. Even when a day or two went by and they still didn’t see or hear from him, the daughters presumed he was busy working his waiter job at Howl at the Moon, a bar on 52nd Street in Manhattan. “We thought he was working double-shifts, as he often did, and were unconcerned at first,” said Kay. When the daughters called Howl at the Moon and discovered he had not been there, they knew something was wrong and officially reported their father missing. The family is perplexed as to Alberto’s whereabouts. His passport was left at home, and his car was not taken. None of his friends or family have had contact with him since July 26. The police said that León’s disappearance is under investigation, and there is no new information in the case. “We’re at a dead end right now,” Kay said. “We don’t know where he is.” Efforts to track his cell phone have been unsuccessful, and the phone has shown no activity since July 26, the family reported. “It’s not like him to just ‘poof,’ and disappear,” Kay remarked. “He would always tell us where he was going.” Alberto León was last seen wearing a red t-shirt, white shorts and red sneakers. He is approximately 5’9” and 190 pounds, with black hair, and typically wears silver glasses. The family is urging anyone with information to come forward and contact either them or the police. The daughters have been busy putting flyers up about their missing father throughout the Bronx and Manhattan. Alberto, who immigrated to New York City from Mexico about 25 years ago, enjoyed visiting Queens, Kay said, so they have hung flyers in that borough as well. “I don’t want to think negative — we have to find a way to keep going,” stated Kay, who said she and her sisters have relied on each other for support during a stressful time. Kay maintains a positive mindset that her father will eventually be found safe. “He’s out there somewhere, I know he is,” she said.
