The PROS are doing it their way
The Harlem Bay Network is helping residents get back on their feet and back out onto the streets of the neighborhood.
The Personalized Recovery Oriented Services, or PROS program, as it is referred to, debuted its brand new offices on 124th Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue this past Wed., May 23rd.
The program, designed for adults aged 18 and over that have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, seeks to provide a stable and caring environment for participants in which to grow, learn, and overcome their fears.
They are also assisted in becoming a part of the community.
The new offices are fully equipped with large classrooms where participants are taught community rehabilitation and support and intensive rehabilitation. Detroit native, Della Golden-Crawford found a home at PROS.
“I left Detroit because I lost everything,” said Golden-Crawford who was grief stricken after having to bury her youngest in Detroit.
“I lost my job, I lost my boyfriend, I lost my house I came to New York to start anew,” she added.
Golden-Crawford moved in with her brother in Harlem who turned out to be a verbal abuser and decided to leave.
“I left his house because I know how bad it could have gotten. I went to live in a shelter and they introduced me to this magical place.”
Golden-Crawford says of PROS which she described as her saving grace.
“They truly changed my life, they saved my life here,” she said looking down at her certificate awarded to her upon completing her classes.
At PROS participants sit in classes that teach them about stress relief, coping with grief, overcoming substance abuse, returning to school, how to go apartment hunting and Golden-Crawford’s favorite: how to ace an interview.
“I used to live in a shelter. Now I live in my own apartment. They taught me everything here. It’s a new life,” said Golden-Crawford.
With a bevy of classes, programs, therapists and opportunities available for the participants to exceed and overcome hardships, The PROS program is a helping hand to members of the community that may otherwise fall through the cracks.
“The PROS program helps teach, empower and inspire people to develop the necessary skills and abilities to negotiate the challenges in their lives and achieve their personal goals,” said Elizabeth Hyde, Director of the Harlem Bay Network PROS program.
“Each person works to develop an individualized recovery plan that allows the program to be
customized to his or her unique set of concerns. This makes PROS a program as flexible as it is successful.”
The PROS program is the only program of its kind in Northern Manhattan.
Funded by the Department of Mental Health and Hygiene the program is changing the lives of those in need in Northern Manhattan.
“Kids Against Violence” Poster Contest
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announces the first annual “Kids Against Violence” poster contest.
It is designed to give Manhattan public school students a proactive role in preventing gun violence and other forms of violence, and an opportunity for kids to help each other learn how to settle arguments with words and not weapons.
GUIDELINES:
To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a Manhattan public school in grades K-5.
To enter, students must submit a poster on 8.5 x 11-inch paper along with a registration form to their school’s principal’s office by June 12, 2012.
Please pick up the registration form at your school’s principal’s office or request one by e-mailing press@dany.nyc.gov.
Schools must send all submissions to 333 7th Ave, New York, NY 10001 before June 15th.
The winner will be announced on June 19th and District Attorney Vance will host a recognition ceremony in the winning student’s classroom on June 21st.
Acceptable media includes: pencil, ink, paint, crayon, chalk, and pastel. Three-dimensional entries will not be accepted. Nothing may be glued, stapled or attached to the artwork. (Note: Chalk, charcoal and pastel entries should be sealed with a fixative spray).
Posters may display the words “Kids Against Violence” or a unique theme created by the student.
Only one entry per student per year is permitted, and each entry must be the work of only one student.
Artwork that contains excessively graphic or violent images will be disqualified.
All artwork must be the student’s original creation. Duplications are not accepted.
A panel of District Attorney and Department of Education officials will judge the contest. Posters will be judged on originality, clarity of message, and overall artistic quality.
PRIZES:
The June 21, 2012 recognition ceremony with District Attorney Vance will take place in the winning student’s classroom. The winner will receive an award certificate, a chance to meet the District Attorney, and a cash prize for their school to use on anti-violence projects courtesy of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
In addition, the winning poster will be displayed in Manhattan public schools.
Free Health Fair
The Medina Temple 19 presents a free health fair on Wed., June 9th at the Prince Hall Masonic Temple, located at 454 West 155th Street. There will be free health screenings available to all community residents, including cholesterol exams and glucose screenings.
There will also be special guest speaker, Ms. Sharon Turnage of the Luis Danvers Organization speaking on leukemia and the importance of becoming a bone marrow donor.
Community Career Fair
The Harlem YMCA is having a career fair on Thurs., June 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 180 West 135th Street.
Entry level, professional and technical employment opportunities will be presented at the Harlem YMCA Community Career Fair, where community residents will be able to speak one-on-one with representatives from companies such as Coca-Cola Refreshments, the Colgate-Palmolive Company, Facility Value, Inc., Marsh & McLennan Companies, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Time Warner Cable and others.
The fair will be held in the gymnasium of the Harlem YMCA.

UP Theater Company hosts benefit
The UP Theater Company will host a fundraiser for its new fall production, K Comma Joseph, this Mon., Jun. 18th at La Marina, the new Inwood restaurant at the Dyckman Marina.
Performing that evening will be Broadway’s The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess cast members, and Inwood neighbors, Roosevelt Andre Credit and Heather Hill.
Inspired by Kafka’s The Trial, K Comma Joseph is a new production by Kirby Fields with a “mild-mannered clerk and his pregnant wife ensnared by the bureaucratic system of their invasive government.”
The evening’ fundraiser will also have raffle prizes and a live auction.
The restaurant is located at 348 Dyckman Street, at the Marina.

Open House to be held for affordable housing co-op

Free English classes at the New York Public Library
The New York Public Library offers English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes as well as reading and writing classes for those who speak English.
These courses are attended by thousands of New Yorkers and all classes are free of charge.

Youth Talent Contest
The organization Fostering Your Life Inc. is hosting a youth talent contest for young people ages 12 through 18 on Fri., Jun. 29th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Los PROS lo están haciendo a su manera
Harlem Bay Network está ayudando a los residentes a ponerse de pie y regresar a las calles del vecindario.
El programa Servicios Orientados a la Recuperación Personalizada o PROS (por sus siglas en inglés) como se le conoce, abrió sus nuevas oficinas en la Calle 124 entre las Avenidas Park y Lexington este pasado miércoles, 23 de mayo.
El programa, diseñado para adultos de 18 y más que han sido diagnosticados con una enfermedad mental sería, busca proveer un ambiente estable y de cuidado en el que los participantes puedan crecer, aprender y superar sus temores.
También han asistido a que sean parte de la comunidad.
Las nuevas oficinas están completamente equipadas con grandes salones de clases donde los participantes se les enseñan rehabilitación comunal y apoyo, e intensa rehabilitación. Della Golden-Crawford, nativa de Detroit encontró un hogar en PROS.
“Dejé Detroit porque lo perdí todo”, dijo Golden-Crawford quien estaba afectada por el dolor luego de tener que haber enterrado a su más joven en Detroit. “Perdí mi trabajo, mi novio, mi casa y vine a Nueva York para comenzar de nuevo”, añadió.
Golden-Crawford se mudó con su hermano a Harlem quien resultó ser un abusador verbal y decidió irse.
“Dejé su casa porque sabía cuán difícil podría haberse puesto. Pasee a vivir en un albergue y ellos me introdujeron a este mágico lugar”.
Golden-Crawford describe a PROS como su lugar de salvación.
“Realmente cambiaron mi vida, aquí salvaron mi vida”, dijo ella mirando su certificado luego de haber terminado sus clases.
En PROS los participantes se sientan en las clases para enseñarles acerca de manejo de estrés, hacer frente a la aflicción, sobreponerse al abuso de substancias, regresar a la escuela, como salir a buscar apartamento y el favorito de Golden-Crawford: Como ganar una entrevista.
Con un grupo de clases, programas, terapistas y oportunidades disponibles para que los participantes excedan y sobrepasen dificultadas, el programa PROS es una mano que ayuda a los miembros de la comunidad que de otra manera hubieran caído en el crack.
“El programa PROS ayuda a enseñar, a desarrollar potencial y a inspirar a las personas a desarrollar las destrezas necesarias y habilidades para negociar los retos en sus vidas y conseguir sus metas personales”, dijo Elizabeth Hyde, Directora del programa Harlem Bay Network PROS. “Cada persona trabaja en el desarrollo de un plan de recuperación individualizada que permite que el programa sea personalizado para su propias preocupaciones. Esto hace de PROS un programa tan flexible como exitoso”.
El programa PROS es el único programa de su clase en el Norte de Manhattan. Financiado por el Departamento de Salud Mental e Higiene el programa está cambiando las vidas de aquellos necesitados en el Norte de Manhattan.
Concurso de afiche “Niños contra la Violencia”
La oficina del Fiscal de Distrito de Manhattan anuncia el primer concurso anual de afiches “Niños contra la Violencia”.
Está diseñado para brindarle a los estudiantes de escuelas públicas en Manhattan un rol proactivo para prevenir la violencia de armas y otras formas de violencia, y una oportunidad para que los niños se ayuden los unos a los otros aprendan como resolver argumentos con palabras y no con armas.
DETALLES:
Para ser elegible, los estudiantes deben asistir a una escuela pública en Manhattan en los grados K-5. Para entrar, los estudiantes deben de someter un afiche en un papel tamaño 8.5 x 11 junto a una forma de inscripción de la oficina del principal de su escuela hasta el 12 de junio de 2012.

Las escuelas deben de enviar todas las inscripciones al 333 7ma Avenida, New York, NY 10001 antes del 15 de junio. El ganador será anunciado el 19 de junio y el Fiscal de Distrito Vance auspiciará una ceremonia de reconocimiento en el salón de clases del estudiante ganador el 21 de junio.
Los medios aceptables incluyen: lápiz, tinta, pintura, creyones, tizas y pastel. Entradas tridimensionales no serán aceptadas. Nada puede ser pegado, con grapas o adjunto al trabajo de arte. (Nota: entradas en tiza, carbón y pastel deben de ser selladas con un aerosol fijador).
El afiche debe de presentar las palabras “Niños contra la Violencia” o un tema único creado por el estudiante.
Sólo una entrada por estudiante por año es permitida, y cada entrada debe de ser el trabajo de un sólo estudiante.
Trabajos de arte que contengan imágenes gráficas excesivas o violentas serán descalificados. Todo el trabajo de arte debe de ser la creación original del estudiante. No se aceptan duplicados. Un panel de oficiales del Fiscal de Distrito y el Departamento de Educación juzgará el concurso. Los afiches serán juzgados por originalidad, claridad de mensaje y calidad artística.
PREMIOS:
La ceremonia de reconocimiento del 21 de junio de 2012 con el Fiscal de Distrito Vance se llevará a cabo en el salón de clases del estudiante ganador. El ganador recibirá un certificado, una oportunidad de conocer al Fiscal de Distrito y un premio en efectivo para que la escuela lo utilice en proyectos de anti-violencia cortesía de la oficina de Fiscal de Distrito de Manhattan.
Además, el afiche ganador será mostrado en las escuelas públicas de Manhattan.
Feria de Salud Gratuita
Medina Temple 19 presenta una ferie de salud gratuita el miércoles, 9 de junio en el Templo Prince Hall Masonic Temple, localizada en el 454 oeste de la Calle 155. Habrán exámenes de salud gratis disponibles para todos los residentes de la comunidad, incluyendo pruebas de exámenes de colesterol y glucosa. También habrá un orador especial en leucemia, la Sra. Sharon Turnage de la Organización Luis Danvers hablando sobre leucemia y la importancia de convertirse en donador de medula ósea.
Feria Comunal de Empleos
El YMCA de Harlem va a tener una feria de empleos el jueves, 21 de junio desde las 10:00 a.m. hasta las 3:00 p.m. en el 180 Oeste de la Calle 135.

Casa abierta de coop de vivienda asequible
Este próximo sábado, 9 de junio de 11 a.m. a 1 p.m., residentes de la comunidad están invitados a una casa abierta en el 3603 de Bradway, un edificio de 36 unidades recién renovado que pronto será propiedad del residente y un coop.
UHAB, el dueño actual, está buscando personas que pasan a ser accionistas de este edificio a bajo costo.
