Dear Editor,
My name is Eileen King and I am President of the Board of Directors of Inwood Tower, which is located at 11 Fort George Hill.
I am writing about a dangerous situation that exists on Fort George Hill due to a reconfiguration of the traffic lanes in order to install a bike lane that very few cyclists are able to use because of the length and steepness of Fort George Hill.
The residents of Fort George Hill were not informed about this change, and the new lanes create hazardous conditions.
Our building presented a video to the Community Board 12M when it met on April 28, 2015. We also presented 100 petitions that describe in words what the video shows in images.
We are asking that the barriers for the bike lane are removed so that the cars can park at the curb. Please help us in correcting this very dangerous situation. Cars have already been damaged due to the closeness of the moving traffic to parked cars.

Re: To order a reversion to the previous configuration
Dear Members of Community Board 12,
We have submitted 100 signed petitions requesting that the traffic lanes on Fort George Hill be restored to their previous configuration. The petition states reasons why this configuration negatively impacts on the health and safety of Fort George Hill Residents.
Here are a few highlights:
- It is dangerous to park because drivers must cross into the moving lane and block traffic coming up the hill in order to back into the parking space.
- It is also dangerous when you come out of the parking space because the sightline for oncoming traffic is limited and you are already in the traffic lane before you can see cars coming up the hill.
- There are fewer parking spaces—about 30.
The moving traffic lane is much closer to parked cars so that collisions are inevitable.- The new configuration ignores the very winding shape of the street that severely limits forward visibility for vehicles traveling at permissible speeds.
- The steep slope and length of the hill is not navigable for most recreational bike riders. Most dismount and walk up the hill.
- The new configuration eliminated a critical emergency route relied upon heavily by emergency service vehicles for decades and delays all emergency responses to the entire Dyckman Valley.
- 50% of the residents at 11 and 17 Fort George Hill are seniors and their ability to board Access Ride and taxis is hindered because of the narrower lane for moving traffic.
We seek further conversation with you about how the reversion to the previous configuration can be effected.
Please consider how the 400 families living on Fort George Hill are subject to more dangerous conditions, more noise and fewer parking spaces.

Mi nombre es Eileen King y soy la presidenta de la Junta de Directores de la Torre Inwood, que se encuentra en el número 11 de Fort George Hill.
Escribo sobre una situación peligrosa que existe en Fort George Hill debido a la reconfiguración de los carriles de circulación con el fin de instalar un carril para bicicletas que muy pocos ciclistas pueden utilizar, esto debido a la longitud y la inclinación de Fort George Hill.

Por favor requerimos de su ayuda para corregir esta muy peligrosa situación. Ya han sido dañados algunos automóviles debido a la cercanía del tráfico en movimiento con los coches estacionados.

Respecto a: Solicitar la reversión a la configuración anterior
Estimados miembros de la Junta Comunitaria 12:
Hemos presentado 100 peticiones firmadas solicitando que los carriles de tránsito en Fort George Hill sean restaurados a su configuración anterior. La petición señala las razones por las cuales la actual configuración repercute negativamente en la salud y seguridad de los residentes de Fort George Hill.
Éstos son algunos puntos destacados:
- Es peligroso estacionarse porque los conductores deben cruzar al carril en movimiento y bloquear el tráfico procedente de la colina para poder dar marcha atrás y ocupar el espacio de estacionamiento.
- También es peligroso cuando la persona sale del espacio de estacionamiento, ya que la línea de visión para el tráfico que se aproxima es limitada y ya está en el carril de tráfico antes de poder ver los coches que suben la colina.
- Hay menos lugares de estacionamiento, alrededor de 30.
- El carril de tránsito está mucho más cerca de los coches estacionados, de manera que las colisiones son inevitables.
- La nueva configuración ignora la forma muy sinuosa de la calle que limita severamente la visibilidad hacia adelante para los vehículos que viajan a velocidades permitidas.
- La fuerte pendiente y la longitud de la colina no son navegables para la mayoría de los ciclistas recreativos. La mayoría desmontan y suben caminando la colina.
- La nueva configuración eliminó una ruta crítica de emergencia de la que han dependido, en gran medida, los vehículos de los servicios de emergencia durante décadas, y retrasa todas las respuestas de emergencia en el Valle Dyckman.
- 50% de los residentes en el 11 y el 17 de Fort George Hill son personas mayores y su capacidad para abordar el Access Ride y los taxis se ve obstaculizada por el carril más estrecho para el tráfico en movimiento.
