Repairs are currently underway at 509 West 212^th Street.

As reported in The Manhattan Times, the building had suffered structural damage late on Wed., Jul. 2^nd and various apartment units in the building had ceiling collapses.

According to Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) spokesperson Juliet Morris, a tarp has since been installed on the roof of the building and temporary repairs have been made to the roof drain.

Morris said the building’s management, identified as CompassRock Real Estate, had been cooperative and that the firm had helped to relocate tenants most seriously impacted to a hotel on the Upper West Side.

But one resident who had stayed at the hotel, Pedro Rijo, has since moved back into the building.

“I was alone on 87^th Street,” said Rijo of the isolation that he felt staying downtown. “I don’t know anyone there. Everyone I know is up here.”

Rijo was the former occupant of a basement level apartment that suffered a collapsed ceiling, with excess water running down the walls, causing excessively humid conditions in the poorly ventilated unit. To compound mattes, he suffers from a heart condition and recently had a kidney transplant for which he undergoes dialysis treatment.

He reported this past Tues., Jul. 15^th that management had agreed to let him move into a larger one-bedroom unit.

“I have a few windows now,” he said. “And I brought my air conditioner from my old apartment.”

While there have been some upgrades, it has not all been easy.

“I don’t have my old dresser anymore or my old bed,” said Rijo.

He added, “They gave me an apartment with a bed and a table and reminded me that it’s their property.”

Moreover, Rijo recently received a letter from the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) stating that the agency was unable to place him in a public housing unit. He is currently looking at the possibility of moving to a senior care center, even though he does not meet the age requirement.

“I’m going to have surgery soon,” said Rijo, pointing to a mass on his right arm. “With my other health concerns, it would be best.”

Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguezsaid he had also been keeping tabs on the rehab work and relocation efforts. He insisted that he would “continue to monitor the situations of these tenants and ensure they are treated fairly.”

“[My office will] work with HPD to hold the landlords accountable for the code violations within the building.”

Rijo said he too would work to ensure that others in the building receive needed attention, citing a family that has waited on repairs for over a year.

“There’s still more they can do here,” said Rijo. “I can’t just stay quiet.”

Como informó The Manhattan Times, el edificio sufrió daños estructurales tarde el miércoles 2 de julio, y varias unidades de departamentos en el edificio tuvieron colapsos de techo.

De acuerdo con la portavoz del Departamento de Preservación y Desarrollo de Vivienda (HPD, por sus siglas en inglés) Juliet Morris, una lona ya se instaló desde entonces en el techo del edificio y se han hecho reparaciones temporales en el desagüe del techo.

Morris dijo que la administración del edificio, identificada como CompassRock Real Estate, ha cooperado y ha ayudado a reubicar a los inquilinos más seriamente impactados en un hotel en el Upper West Side.

Pero uno de los residentes alojados en el hotel, Pedro Rijo, se ha trasladado de vuelta al edificio.

“Estaba solo en la calle 87”, dijo Rijo del aislamiento que sentía quedándose en el centro. “No conozco a nadie ahí. Todos mis conocidos están por aquí”.

Rijo fue el ex ocupante de un departamento a nivel de sótano que sufrió un colapso de techo. El exceso de agua corriendo por las paredes provocó condiciones de excesiva humedad en la unidad con poca ventilación. Para agravar la situación, sufre de una enfermedad del corazón y recientemente tuvo un trasplante de riñón, por el cual se somete a tratamiento de diálisis.

El pasado martes 15 de julio, Rijo informó que la administración aceptó dejar que se mudara a una unidad más grande, de una habitación.

“Tengo un par de ventanas ahora”, dijo. “Y llevé el aire acondicionado de mi antiguo departamento”.

Si bien ha habido algunas mejoras, no todo ha sido fácil.

“Ya no tengo mi antigua cómoda, ni mi cama”, dijo Rijo.

Y añadió: “Me dieron un departamento con una cama y una mesa, y me recordaron que es de su propiedad”.

Por otra parte, Rijo recibió recientemente una carta de la Autoridad de Vivienda de la ciudad de Nueva York (NYCHA por sus siglas en inglés), declarando que la agencia fue incapaz de ubicarlo en una unidad de vivienda pública. Actualmente está estudiando la posibilidad de trasladarse a un centro de atención para adultos mayores, a pesar de que no cumple con el requisito de la edad.

“Voy a someterme a una cirugía pronto”, dijo Rijo, señalando una masa en su brazo derecho. “Con mis otros problemas de salud, sería la mejor decisión”.

El concejal Ydanis Rodríguez dijo que también ha estado vigilando las labores de rehabilitación y los esfuerzos de reubicación. Insistió en que “seguirá vigilando la situación de estos inquilinos para garantizar que reciban un trato justo”.

“[Mi oficina] trabajará con HPD para seguir haciendo responsables a los propietarios de las violaciones de código en del edificio”.

Rijo dijo que él también trabajará para asegurarse que los demás en el edificio reciban la atención necesaria, citando a una familia que ha esperado reparaciones por más de un año.

“Todavía hay más cosas que deben hacer aquí”, dijo Rijo. “No puedo permanecer callado”.
