PTP storms Palace

People of all ages are set to take over the United Palace Theatre for a night of art and inspiration called The People Storm the Palace. Featuring selected works from People’s Theatre Project (PTP), the event looks to celebrate all that is possible when neighbors unite for creative action.
The People Storm the Palace will feature a full line-up of school and community-based programs in which community residents and actors, ranging from ages 5 to 75, will present highlights from the current season – in a 90-minute vaudeville-style event.
“Expect to see kids doing circus yoga while dressed as their favorite fruits and vegetables in one moment, and teens performing their own poetry about the street they live on in the next moment, meanwhile a middle school Macbeth and Lady Macbeth duo are waiting in the wings,” explains PTP Co-Executive and Program Director Mino Lora. “And be ready to hop on stage yourself when our adult actors perform one of their interactive plays. Oh yes, we are shaking things up. We really are storming the palace.”
The cast of The People Storm the Palace is comprised of nearly 100 community actors who have taken part throughout the year in one of PTP’s 13 ensemble groups.
The ensemble groups are well versed in performance arts. Throughout the year, they have worked together with a professional teaching artist to create an original piece of theatre and have performed for friends, family and the community at one or more neighborhood venues including the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, the Wintergarden Plaza at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, school classrooms and auditoriums.
The People Storm the Palace will be a culmination of that work, bringing the season’s most electric moments to the stage of the Palace.
“We’ve performed at the Palace a number of times now,” says Co-Executive and Managing Director Bob Braswell. “And I’m still floored every time I step on to the massive stage.”
“This will leave a big impression on our actors,” he added. “They will remember performing in this magnificent room for the rest of their lives.”
The People’s Theatre Project’s community and school-based programs engage groups of young people and adults in the process of devising and performing original theatrical events that address some of the most pressing issues NYC’s neighborhoods face. People’s Theatre Project’s works have focused on children’s health, race, identity, bullying and discrimination, deportation, gentrification, housing rights, and fraud against immigrants.

Gente de todas las edades está lista para tomar el teatro del United Palace para una noche de arte e inspiración llamada The People Storm the Palace. Con obras seleccionadas del Proyecto Teatro del Pueblo (PTP, por sus siglas en ingles), el evento busca celebrar todo lo que es posible cuando los vecinos se unen para la acción creativa.
The People Storm the Palace presentará una completa gama de programas escolares y basados en la comunidad en los que los residentes de la comunidad y actores, entre las edades de 5 a 75, presentarán lo más destacado de la temporada en curso, y en un evento de estilo vodevil de 90 minutos.
“Esperen ver a niños haciendo yoga de circo mientras están vestidos como sus frutas y verduras favoritas en un momento, y a adolescentes que realizan su propia poesía sobre la calle en la que viven en el momento siguiente, mientras tanto un dúo de Macbeth y Lady Macbeth de escuela intermedia están esperando tras bambalinas”, explica la codirector ejecutivo y director de programa de PTP, Mino Lora. “Y estén listos para saltar al escenario ustedes mismos cuando nuestros actores adultos realicen una de sus obras de teatro interactivas. Oh, sí, estamos sacudiendo las cosas. Realmente estamos asaltando al palacio”.
El elenco de The People Storm the Palace está compuesto por cerca de 100 actores de la comunidad que han participado durante todo el año en uno de 13 grupos conjuntos de PTP.
Los grupos conjuntos están bien versados en las artes escénicas. A lo largo del año, han trabajado junto con un artista de enseñanza profesional para crear una pieza original de teatro y han actuado para amigos, familia y la comunidad en uno o más lugares del barrio, incluyendo la Mansión Morris-Jumel, el Centro Cultural Alianza Dominicana, Wintergarden Plaza en el hospital infantil Morgan Stanley, en salones de clase y auditorios escolares.
The People Storm the Palace será la culminación de ese trabajo, llevando los momentos más eléctricos de la temporada a los escenarios del Palacio.
“Hemos realizado presentaciones en el Palacio en varias ocasiones”, dice el codirector ejecutivo y director general Bob Braswell. “Y todavía estoy anonadado cada vez que entro al escenario masivo”.
“Esto dejará una gran impresión en nuestros actores”, añadió. “Recordarán haberse presentado en este magnífico espacio por el resto de sus vidas”.
Los programas comunitarios y escolares del Proyecto Teatro del Pueblo involucran a grupos de jóvenes y adultos en el proceso de idear y realizar eventos teatrales originales que abordan algunos de los problemas más urgentes que enfrentan los barrios de Nueva York. Las obras del Proyecto Teatro del Pueblo se han centrado en la salud infantil, la raza, la identidad, el acoso, la discriminación, la deportación, el aburguesamiento, el derecho a la vivienda y el fraude contra los inmigrantes.
