Children receiving care at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital over the season were treated to a series of special events and activities that included visits from, among others, The Lil’ Bravest, comprised of local firefighters from Engine 84 and Ladder 34, a popular rescue dog, and the world-famous Rockettes. On Mon., Dec. 7th, members of the FDNY made a special delivery of toys to Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and spent the afternoon visiting with the children, and their families, taking pictures and hearing the children’s wish lists. The Lil’ Bravest was started by a group of firefighters from Washington Heights’ Engine 84 and Ladder 34 in honor of two of their own that passed away in 2010. In an unexpected tragedy, Rory O’Flaherty, who served two tours in Iraq with the U.S. Army, passed away due to an enlarged heart on October 17th of that year. He was 31. Two months later, the senior man of the firehouse John “Sully” Sullivan, a 27-year veteran of Ladder 34, died on Christmas Eve. The cause was cancer, which is believed was a result of his rescue and recovery efforts following September 11th. In response to these losses, the firefighters founded The Lil’ Bravest to improve the quality of life for children who are hospitalized or being treated for childhood diseases. Funding for such parties, during which toys, t-shirts, and teddy bears are distributed to the patients and families, is made possible by the support of the firemen and The Orange Branch. And there was more in store. On Fri., Dec. 11, The Rockettes, on behalf of the Garden of Dreams Foundation, delivered toys to patients at the hospital. This year marked the tenth annual toy drive in support of the Garden of Dreams Foundation and its partner organizations, which include NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. More than 600 new toys were collected by patrons attending the opening night of the 2015 Radio City Christmas Spectacular this November. Marnie the Dog also attended holiday party. The 14-year-old Shih Tzu, a senior rescue dog and social media sensation, surprised the pediatric patients as well as took photos with NYP staff. Marnie has been popular on Instagram and Twitter; her Instagram account, for example, has over one million Instagram followers. She likely has a few more now.
