Lining up at the fair – and looking for work

The line in front of the Harlem Armory on 142nd Street and Fifth Avenue snaked its way around the block.
There were no Kanye Nike sneakers on sale, and no new offering from Apple to bring the crowd.
It was the promise of work that drove forward local residents from throughout neighborhoods in northern Manhattan and the Bronx forward early on Thurs., June 7th.
Hosted by the New York State Department of Labor, New York State Assemblymember Keith Wright and Congressman Charles B. Rangel, the Harlem job fair was one of five held throughout the city, one in each borough.
The initiative was spearheaded by the office of Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“As we work to get New York’s economy back on track, these job fairs will help connect unemployed New Yorkers to job opportunities,” said Governor Cuomo in a statement.
“The job fairs will be valuable resources for local businesses that are hiring, as well as offering job seekers an opportunity to use the many free services offered by New York State that can help the unemployed get back to work.”
The Harlem job fair at the Armory, in particular, was a draw, as it hosted over 40 employers.
Those in attendance included recent college graduates; those looking to start a new career; those unemployed for longer than they’d imagined; and many looking for extra income.
All came out primed with their best pitch and polish.
“I feel that I might possibly get a job from this fair,” said Mariel Rosario. “I’m a recent grad and I’ve spent my time applying online, and calling. I’ve been trying so hard.”
Rosario, a life-long Washington Heights resident, recently returned home after graduating from Syracuse University. She said she found the job market to be a difficult one to date., but was committed to landing work.
“The long wait on the line was worth it,” she added. “This is very beneficial for me. In New York, you are competing with so many people, it’s very challenging to get a job so these fairs play a great role in the job search.”
And the job fairs, as explained by state Labor Department representatives, will be an ongoing occurrence – until a significant dent is made in the state’s unemployment rate, which has remained at 8.5%.
“The governor decided that he wanted to have these fairs on a massive basis and [they] have just been flooded,” said Rachel Gold, New York State Department of Labor Special Counsel.
“We are going to continue to do this until we don’t have lines around the block.”
“I think this is a great idea to have this many different companies in one place trying to hire, since there is such a bad job market out there right now,” said Bronx resident Cheer Alvarez.
Still, there are challenges for those whose work experience has been focused in one field.
“I have a background in healthcare, and there weren’t many healthcare companies here,” she added, pledging to keep plowing ahead.
As did Special Counsel Gold.
“Everyone was invited to this fair,” said Gold. “Everyone here is offered an opportunity.”

No había ‘sneakers’ de Kanye Nike en venta y ninguna nueva oferta de Apple para atraer la multitud.
Fue la promesa de trabajo la que atrajo a los residentes locales de todos los vecindarios en el Norte de Manhattan y el Bronx temprano el jueves, 7 de junio.
Auspiciado por el Departamento del Trabajo del Estado de Nueva York, el miembro de la Asamblea Estatal Keith Wright y el Congresista Charles B. Rangel, la feria de empleos de Harlem fue una de cinco llevada a cabo a través de la ciudad, una en cada condado.
La iniciativa fue encabezada por la oficina del Gobernador Andrew Cuomo.
“Mientras trabajamos para que la economía de Nueva York trabajara nuevamente, estas ferias de empleos ayudaran a conectar a los neoyorquinos desempleados con oportunidades de empleo”, dijo el Gobernador Cuomo en un comunicado.
“Las ferias de empleos serán valiosos recursos para los comercios locales que están contratando, como también ofrecerles a los buscadores de empleo una oportunidad de utilizar los muchos servicios gratuitos ofrecidos por el Estado de Nueva York que puede ayudar al desempleados a regresar a trabajar”.
La Feria de Empleos en el Armory, en particular, fue una atracción y alojó a más de 40 empleadores.
Entre los que asistieron habían recién graduados de colegios; aquellos buscando comenzar una nueva carrera; aquellos desempleados por más tiempo del imaginado y muchos buscando ingresos adicionales.
Todos salieron armados y pulidos.
“Siento que podría conseguir un empleo como resultado de esta feria”, dijo Mariel Rosario. “Soy una recién graduada y paso mi tiempo aplicando ‘online’ y llamando. He estado tratando bien fuerte”.
Rosario, residente de toda la vida de Washington Heights, recientemente regresó a su hogar luego de graduarse de la Universidad Syracuse.
Dijo que hasta la fecha ha encontrado difícil el mercado de empleos, pero estaba comprometida a encontrar empleo.
“La larga espera en la fila valió la pena”, añadió ella.
“Esto es bien beneficioso para mi. En Nueva York, tu estas compitiendo con tantas personas, es bien difícil conseguir un empleo así es que estas ferias juegan un gran papel en la búsqueda de empleo”.
Y las ferias de empleo, según explicado por los representantes del Departamento de Trabajo, seguirán sucediendo – hasta que se haga una mella significativa en la tasa de desempleo del estado el cual ha permanecido en 8.5%.
“El gobernador decidió que deseaba tener estas ferias de una manera masiva y solo han ido fluyendo”, dijo Rachel Gold, Asesora Especial del Departamento de Trabajo del Estado de Nueva York.
“Vamos a continuar haciendo esto hasta que no tengamos filas alrededor del bloque.”
“Pienso que es una gran idea el tener todas estas diferentes compañías en un lugar tratando de contratar, ya que ahora mismo hay un mercado de empleo muy malo”, dijo la residente del Bronx, Cheer Alvarez.
Aun así hay retos para aquellos con experiencia laboral enfocado en un campo. “Yo tengo antecedentes en cuidado de salud y no habían muchas compañías de salud aquí”, añadió ella, comprometiéndose a seguir hacia delante.
Como lo hizo el Asesor Especial Gold.
“Todo el mundo fue invitado a esta feria”, dijo Gold. “Todo el mundo aquí se le ofrece una oportunidad”.
