Fifteen Fervor
When, in 1999, the founders of the Amber Charter School were writing proposals, they were determined to establish the school uptown, for the children of Washington Heights.
“[But] we couldn’t find a building,” laughs Soledad Hiciano.
She would remember.
Hiciano serves as Board Chair and is Executive Director of the Association of Progressive Dominicans (ACDP), the community-based organization that sponsored the original charter application.
Their search led the group instead to set up shop in East Harlem on East 106th Street. There, they have forged partnerships with El Museo del Barrio, 92 Street Y, Vanderbilt YMCA, and Harlem Hospital, among others.
“We fell in love with that community,” explains Hiciano.
Since 2000, the school has educated more than 5,000 children, with robust enrollment of a diverse student body: 58% Latino and 36% African-Americans. Eighty five percent of the student population qualifies for free and reduced lunch.
And the school has a proven track record.
On the state ELA and Math assessments CSD 4, 5, and 6, Amber students have received high marks, and have consistently outperformed their peers. In the last academic year, 100% of Amber’s 4th grade students scored 100% proficient in the state science tests.
From kindergarten through graduation, students receive instruction in Spanish, and are afforded special education services including counseling, speech, and access to occupational and physical therapy off campus.
“It is exciting to celebrate 15 years of educating children,” said Dr. Vasthi R. Acosta, the school’s Executive Director. “There is nothing more gratifying than ensuring that our students become lifelong learners always curious about the world and ready to make a difference.”
The school serves over 500 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
As it prepares to celebrate its 15th Anniversary Gala, or its Quinceañera, Amber is returning to its roots – and growing.
The School’s Board has applied for and received authorization from the State University of New York’s (SUNY) Charter Schools Institute to open a second charter school in the fall of 2016 in Washington Heights.
“Our obtaining the building that will serve as Amber’s new home uptown was not easy,” said Luis Miranda, the Manhattan Times publisher and former Board Chair of 12 years. “Without the support of institutions like Citibank and the Raza Development Fund, our dreams for our own space would not have come true.”
“It seems fitting to return to Washington Heights as we celebrate our Quinceañera,” added Hiciano.

Cuando en 1999 los fundadores de la Escuela Charter Amber escribían sus propuestas, estaban decididos a fundar la escuela en el norte del condado para los niños de Washington Heights.
“Pero no pudimos encontrar un edificio”, se ríe Soledad Hiciano.
Ella lo recuerda.
Hiciano se desempeña como presidenta de la Junta y es directora ejecutiva de la Asociación de Dominicanos Progresistas (ACDP por sus siglas en inglés), la organización comunitaria que patrocinó la solicitud original.
Su búsqueda llevó al grupo a establecerse en East Harlem, en la calle 106 este, donde forjaron alianzas con El Museo del Barrio, la Y de la calle 92, la YMCA de Vanderbilt y el Hospital de Harlem, entre otros.
“Nos enamoramos de esa comunidad”, explica Hiciano.
Desde el año 2000, la escuela ha educado a más de 5,000 niños y niñas, con inscripción robusta de un cuerpo estudiantil diverso: 58% latinos y 36% afroamericanos. El ochenta y cinco por ciento de la población estudiantil califica para almuerzo gratuito o a precio reducido.
Y la escuela tiene un historial probado.
Sobre el estado de ELA y las evaluaciones de matemáticas CSD 4, 5 y 6, los estudiantes de Amber han recibido altas calificaciones y han superado constantemente a sus compañeros. En el último año académico, el 100% de los estudiantes de 4° grado de Amber obtuvieron 100% en las pruebas estatales de ciencias.
Desde el jardín de infantes hasta la graduación, los estudiantes reciben enseñanza en español y gozan de servicios de educación especial, incluyendo consejería, terapia del habla y acceso a una terapia ocupacional y física fuera del campus.
“Es emocionante celebrar 15 años de educar a los niños”, dijo la Dra. Vasthi R. Acosta, directora ejecutiva de la escuela. “No hay nada más gratificante que asegurar que nuestros estudiantes se conviertan en aprendices de por vida, siempre curiosos sobre el mundo y listos para hacer una diferencia”.
La escuela atiende a más de 500 estudiantes desde jardín de infantes hasta quinto grado.
Mientras se prepara para celebrar su gala del 15 aniversario, o su Quinceañera, Amber está volviendo a sus raíces, y creciendo.
La Junta Escolar ha solicitado y recibido la autorización del Instituto de Escuelas Charter de la Universidad Estatal de Nueva York (SUNY por sus siglas en inglés) para abrir una segunda escuela charter en el otoño de 2016 en Washington Heights.
“Comprar el edificio que sirve de hogar a Amber, no fue fácil”, dice Luis Miranda, publisher del Manhattan Times, y presidente de la Junta de Amber por 12 años. “Sin el apoyo de Instituciones como Citibank y la Raza Development Fund, nuestro sueño de ser dueños de nuestro hogar, no se hubiese convertido en realidad.”
“Parece adecuado volver a Washington Heights mientras celebramos nuestra Quinceañera”, dice Hiciano.
