Being a musician in New York City can be far from glamorous.
It entails long hours, heavy lifting and late nights. The work also often offers little in the way of money or benefits, and can help incur great debt.
It is more than likely a second job will be in order to pay for the first.
Yet while working-class musicians pursue different kinds of goals, be they honky-tonk or hip-hop, all are driven by a dogged love of craft.
“There’s been something missing somewhere between 1960’s British Blues, Ray Charles, and Jack White,” said Hank Wagner. “Hopefully, we have filled that gap.”
Wagner’s dream is simple.
Take his band, Coyote Love, and make it into a machine capable of generating enough income so his wife, Sarver, can quit her job.
Wagner’s love of music runs deep, but that love only goes so far if the credit card debt continuously piles up.
After years of putting the different parts of the machine in place, Wagner and Coyote Love are ready to make their first move in what he hopes will be a long and fruitful career.
Beginning this fall, Coyote Love will release a blues record, two music videos and a documentary.
Also in the works is a ramp-up of live shows throughout the city as well as upstate, in towns like Delhi, New Paltz, Peekskill and Roxbury.
The determination and perseverance of Wagner is a primary reason for the new turn of events.
Born and raised in Manhattan, Wagner has called Inwood home for over twenty years. He has spent a lifetime in the arts, highlighted by appearances in the hit show “De La Guarda,” co-writing and performing the psychedelic rock drama “Drop” with Paul and Christine Mascott and a 4 episode stint on HBO’s “OZ”.
Coyote Love was born out of the world of Inverse Theater, an experimental theater company Wagner used to perform with over the past decade. There he forged an alliance with a long list of talented musicians and technicians that helped him create the first Coyote Love album.
After six years of off-and-on recording, and brimming with a potent blend of rock, pop and funk, the album was released in 2009.
For the past three years, Coyote Love has played countless shows and slowly built up a following in Manhattan and upstate New York.
It was, knew Wagner, time to capitalize on all the hard work and take things to the next level.
He was not seeking, however, to record another album that would be the same as the last one.
“It was time to take our sound and deconstruct it,” said Wagner, “and to explore our different influences more fully.”
Why a Blues record?
“For artistic reasons, I had to record and play the Blues I hear in my head, ’cause they wouldn’t let me be,” smiled Wagner.
It was not the only consideration.
“This series will allow me to connect with a more Blues, Jazz, Americana loving crowd,” he added.
While the Blues is only one form of Americana music that makes the up total Coyote Love experience, Wagner insisted, “When we play our Blues, we are committing 100% to it with every fiber of our being.”
The first video for the song, “Bettin’ Dirty Water” was shot in September under the overpass of the Henry Hudson Highway on Dyckman Avenue. The band and video crew assembled early in the morning despite the uncooperative weather foretold in a gray bank of clouds.
During the third take, the skies released a torrent of water, yet the band played on.
What was captured was the wrath of nature being held at bay by an exciting live performance of an old-school original Blues and rock song.
The second video for a cover of the Jamie Foxx song, “Blame it (On the Alcohol)” is scheduled to be filmed in an Inwood bar sometime this November.
Bettin’ Dirty Water, the twenty-minute Coyote Love documentary, tells the story of the band during the making of the Blues record as well as an account of the obstacles of a working class musician in building a self-sustainable musical entity.
So what’s next?
Beyond the videos and the documentary, Wagner plans to “rebuild the website, hit the college market, start 2 more blogs, a podcast and release a new
Blues tune every month for a year.” And beyond even that, begin the foundation for what will be “a relentless NYC-style funk series to be released in 2014.”

Comenzando este otoño, Coyote Love lanzará un disco de ‘blues’, dos videos musicales y un documental.
También hay espectáculos en vivo a través de la ciudad como también en la pare alta de la ciudad, en pueblos como Delhi, New Paltz, Peekskill y Roxbury.

Sin embargo, el no estaba buscando grabar otro disco para que ocurriera lo mismo de la última vez.
“Era tiempo de tomar nuestro sonido y deconstruir”, dijo Wagner, “y explorar más a fondo nuestras diferentes influencias”.
¿Por qué un disco de blues?
“Por razones artísticas, tenía que grabar y tocar el ‘blues’ que escucho en mi cabeza, porque no me dejaban ser”, sonrió Wagner.
No fue la única consideración.
“Esta serie me permitirá conectarme con más amantes de los blues, jazz, americana”, añadió.
Aunque los ‘blues’ es solo una forma de música Americana que hace el total de la experiencia de Coyote Love, Wagner insistió, “cuando tocamos nuestro ‘blues’, nos estamos comprometiendo 100% a ello con cada fibra de nuestro ser”.
El primer video para la canción, “Bettin Dirty Water”, fue filmado en septiembre bajo el elevado del Henry Hudson Highway en la Avenida Dyckman. La banda y el equipo de video montaron temprano en la mañana a pesar del clima anunciado en un banco de grises nubes.
Durante la tercera toma, el cielo dejó caer un torrente de agua, aunque la banda tocó. Lo que fue capturado por la ira de la naturaleza mantenida a raya en la bahía por una emocionante interpretación en vivo de canciones ‘blues’ y rock.
El segundo video para una cubierta de la canción de Jamie Foxx, “Blame it (On the Alcohol)” está programada para ser filmada en una barra de Inwood en algún momento en noviembre.
“Bettin’ Dirty Water’, el documental de 20 minutos de Coyote Love, cuenta la historia de una banda durante la producción del disco de ‘blues’ como también un recuento de los obstáculos de un músico de clase media construyendo una entidad musical auto sostenible.
¿Qué es lo próximo?
Después de los videos y el documental, Wagner planea “reconstruir la página electrónica, dirigirse al mercado de la universidad, comenzar dos nuevos ‘blogs’, un ‘podcast’ y sacar un nuevo ‘blues’ cada mes por un año”. Y aun más allá de eso, comenzar la fundación de lo que será “una implacable serie estilo ‘funk’ NYC para ser publicada en el 2014.
