Rally on Childcare Budget Cuts
This Thurs., May 31st, local community groups and organizations, including Alianza Dominicana, Inwood Community Services, Asociacion Comunal de Dominicanos Progresistas (ACDP), Fresh Youth Initiatives (FYI), and members of Community Board 12 will gather for a rally to protest the budget cuts to child care services proposed in the Executive Budget.
Residents are called to gather at 11:00 a.m. in City Hall Park (on the Broadway side).

Ricardo A. Pérez Place is unveiled
This past Sat., May 26th, the corner of West 136th Street and Broadway was co-named the Ricardo A. Pérez Place.
New York City Councilmember Robert Jackson, together with New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat and New York State Assemblymember Guillermo Linares, Telemundo newscaster Isolda Peguero, community leaders, and the family of the late Ricardo A. Pérez gathered to honor his life and legacy.
The Pérez family also sponsored a street fair for the children of the community from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m, and the ceremony was followed by a reception at Broadway Housing Communities’ Rio II Gallery at 583 Riverside Drive.
Residents and family members recalled Ricardo A. Pérez as an integral part of the community, as an entrepreneur in Washington Heights and an active leader in different organizations.
Pérez owned various pharmacies, a medical clinic and over thirty money transfer locations. He served on the Community Board for over thirty years and donated and contributed to various local schools, churches, the NYPD, the Police Athletic League’s baseball and softball leagues and the Dominican Chamber of Business.
Pérez was also a strong supporter of Montefiore Park and contributed towards its maintenance and care and was an active member of the Lions Club and their charitable work in the areas of health and welfare.
He worked with the local precinct to help fight the drug epidemic in the neighborhood, and contributed to the 30th Precinct Community Council by donating to annual events such as the National Night Out against Crime, the Senior Citizen Christmas Dinners and the Children’s Christmas Party.
Clean Street Day Event
New York City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez and Bronx Community Board 8’s Environment and Sanitation Committee invite community residents to a “Clean Street Day Event” on Sat., June 9th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
The meeting point will be at the Water of Life Pentecostal Church at 168 West 225th Street, in Marble Hill.
The rain date is Sat., June 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The goals of the event are to create clean street awareness, encourage community participation, promote unity, and provide an opportunity to meet your neighbors.
Event co-sponsors include New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat and New York City Councilmembers Fernando Cabrera and Oliver Koppell; community churches such as Carolina Baptist Church, and St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church; the Marble Hill Tenants Association, the 50th Precinct Promenade Tenants Association; and the New York City Department of Sanitation.

Strengthening Families Program celebrates 2012 completion
The Washington Heights Inwood Coalition will mark the completion of its Strengthening Families Program 2012 with a reception on Tues., June 5th at 7:00 p.m.
The reception will honor the children and their parents who completed 14 sessions of the program, which is sponsored by The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.
It will be held at the Star Senior Center, located at 650 West 187th Street (between Wadsworth and Broadway).

Change in Date for 33rd Precinct Council Meeting
Community residents are asked to note that June’s meeting has been changed to June 20th at 6:30 p.m. There will be no meeting on June 27th.

Susan de Vries, Director of the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum, will discuss its preservation history; then Pat Courtney, from Volunteers for Isham Park, and Cole Thompson, co-organizer of “Lost Inwood” and author of myinwood.net will serve as guides leading the tour to Isham Park, passing through the entrance gate and by the historic Ginkgo tree, up to the site of the former Isham residence to hear about its history, the history of William H. Hurst House, and the now lost Seaman Drake mansion, finishing up at the Seaman Drake Estate Entrance Arch on Broadway.
SHORAKAPOK: THE NATIVE AMERICANS OF NORTHERN MANHATTAN

Northern Manhattan has a vibrant history of the Nativespeoples of this land. The Urban Park Rangers along with Harlan Pruden, a member of the Cree Nation, will lead an interactive lecture and walk on the Lenape and other Native Peoples of Northern anhattan as they also explore the Indian rock shelters and Inwood Hill and Isham Parks.
WHERE’S THE WATER?

Inwood’s Springs and Wells of Yesteryear, and what became of them, will be the topic of discussion.
Don Rice co-organizer of “Lost Inwood” will expand his presentation at the Indian Road Café earlier this year: “Running water wasn’t available to Inwood residents until the later part of the 1800s. Before it became possible to simply turn on a faucet, how did people get fresh water to drink and use?”
The answer: a network of springs and wells which were spring-kled throughout northern Manhattan.
We’ll use virtual dowsing rods to trace their story. Where were Inwood’s springs and wells of yesteryear? Are any still around today?
ART DECO/WPA DESIGN IN ISHAM AND INWOOD HILL PARKS
Sunday June 24th at 1:00 p.m.
Meet at Inwood Hill Nature Center.
A slide lecture ending in a walking tour with Pat Courtney. Take a look at the Art Deco/WPA era design and structures in both parks. Learn of the designers discovered during the process of the study for potential historic districts in Inwood which was selected in 2011 as one of the inaugural “Six to Celebrate” communities by the Historic Districts Council.

Celebrate Julia Isham Taylor’s birthday (JITs actual birth date: June 28, 1866). Come help to celebrate the birthday of the woman who initiated the gift of Isham Park in 1911-12.
McFadden Scholarship Award winners are presented
On the evening of Thurs., May 17th, Isabella Geriatric Center celebrated the 15th Annual Edward J. McFadden Scholarship Awards Dinner.
The Edward J. McFadden Scholarship Fund was established by the Isabella Foundation, Inc., an affiliate of Isabella Geriatric Center, to benefit community youth.
The fund provides college scholarships to outstanding students who reside in the greater Washington Heights/Inwood Community and have participated in voluntary community service.
Students applying for this award must be current high school seniors living in the community of Washington Heights and Inwood attending a school in New York City.
Applicants for the scholarship must submit a written application, transcripts, letters of reference and an essay describing their community involvement and what it means to them.
In addition, the Scholarship Selection Committee must interview semi-finalists.
This year’s committee consisted of six community leaders: New York City Councilmember Robert Jackson, James Berlin and Carole Mulligan of Community Board 12, Martin Collins, Community Liaison of the Office of Councilmember Jackson, Andrew Rubinson of Grace Outreach, and Yokarina Duarte from the office of Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez.
Gold award winners earned a scholarship in the amount of $2,000.
The silver award winners earned a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

Reunión sobre recortes presupuestarios en cuidado infantil
Este jueves, 31 de mayo, grupos comunales locales y organizaciones, incluyendo Alianza Dominicana, Inwood Community Services, Asociación Comunal de Dominicanos Progresistas (ACDP), Fresh Youth Initiatives (FYI), y la Junta Comunal #12 se reunirán para protestar los recortes presupuestarios a los servicios de cuidado infantil propuestos en el Presupuesto Ejecutivo.

Ricardo A. Pérez Place es descubierto
El Concejal de la ciudad de Nueva York Robert Jackson, junto al Senador Estatal Adriano Espaillat, el Asambleísta Guillermo Linares y la periodista Isolda Peguero, líderes comunales y la familia del fallecido Ricardo A. Pérez se reunieron para honrar su vida y legado.
La familia Pérez también auspicio una feria en la calle para los niños de la comunidad de 10:00 a.m. a 1:00 p.m., y la ceremonia fue seguida por una recepción en Broadway Housing Communities’ Rio II Gallery en el 583 de Riverside Drive.
Residentes y miembros de la familia recordaron a Ricardo A. Pérez como parte integral de la comunidad, como empresario en Washington Heights y un activo líder en diferentes organizaciones.
Pérez es dueño de varias farmacias, una clínica médica y más de treinta locales de transferencia de dinero. Sirvió en la Junta Comunal por más de treinta años y donó, y contribuyó a varias escuelas locales, iglesias, NYPD, las ligas de pelota y softball de la Liga Atlética Policiaca y la Cámara de Comercio Dominicana.
Pérez también fue un fuerte seguidor del Parque Montefiore y contribuyó hacia su mantenimiento y cuidado, y fue un miembro activo del Club de Leones y sus obras de caridad en las áreas de salud y bienestar.
Trabajó con el precinto local para ayudar a luchar la epidemia de drogas en el vecindario, y contribuyó al Concejo Comunal del Precinto 30 donando a eventos anuales tales como el ‘National Night Out Against Crime’, ‘Senior Citizen Christmas Dinners’ y el ‘Children’s Christmas Party’.

Programa Fortaleciendo Familias celebra finalización del 2012
La Coalición Washington Heights Inwood marcará el final de su Programa Fortaleciendo Familias 2012 con una recepción el martes, 5 de junio a las 7:00 p.m.
La recepción honrará a los niños y sus padres quienes completaron 14 sesiones del programa, el cual es auspiciado por la Oficina de Servicios Contra el Alcoholismo y el Abuso de Substancias del Estado de Nueva York.
Se llevará a cabo en el Centro de Envejecientes Star, localizado en el 650 del oeste de la Calle 187 (entre Wadsworth y Broadway).

El Parque Isham celebra su Centenario durante el Paseo de las Artes con una serie de lecturas y excursiones.
Preservación y Pérdida: Residencias Históricas en Inwood

Reunidos en el Museo Dyckman Farmhouse en la esquina de Broadway en la Calle 204, Susan de Vries, Directora del Museo Dyckman Farmhouse, discutirá su preservación histórica; entonces Pat Courtney, de Voluntarios del Parque Isham y Cole Thompson, co-organizador de “Lost Inwood” y autor de myinwood.net servirán como guías de la excursión del Parque Isham. Pasarán a través de la entrada del portón y por el histórico árbol Ginkgo, hasta el lugar de la antigua residencia Isham para escuchar acerca de su historia, la historia de William Hurst House, y la ahora perdida mansión Seaman Drake, terminando en la Entrada de Seaman Drake Estate Arch en Broadway.

Arte Deco/WPA Diseño en los Parques Isham e Inwood Hill

Una conferencia que termina en una excursión con Pat Courtney. Dele un vistazo a la era del Arte Deco/WPA y a los diseños y estructuras en ambos parques. Se presentan los ganadores de las becas McFadden
La noche del jueves, 17 de mayo, el Centro Geriátrico Isabella celebró la cena anual número 15 de los Premios Edward J. McFadden.
El Fondo de Becas Edward J. McFadden fue establecido por la Fundación Isabella, Inc., una afiliada del Centro Geriátrico Isabella, para beneficiar a los jóvenes de la comunidad.
El fondo provee becas universitarias a estudiantes sobresalientes que residen en Washington Heights/Inwood y han participado en servicio comunal voluntario.
Los estudiantes que aplican para este premio deben de ser estudiantes de último año viviendo en las comunidades de Washington Heights e Inwood asistiendo a una escuela en la ciudad de Nueva York.
Los solicitantes de la beca deben de someter una aplicación escrita, cartas de referencia y un ensayo describiendo el envolvimiento en la comunidad y lo que significó para ellos.
Además, el Comité de Selección de Becas debe de entrevistar los semi-finalistas.
El comité de este año consintió en seis líderes comunales: el Concejal Robert Jackson, James Berlin y Carole Mulligan de la Junta Comunal 123, Martin Collins, Enlace Comunal de la oficina del Concejal Jackson, Andrew Rubinson de ‘Grace Outreach’ y Yokarina Duarte de la oficina del Concejal Ydanis Rodriguez.
Los ganadores dorados recibieron una beca por la cantidad de $2,000.
