Art-making with Martorell
From now through May 29, the renowned Puerto Rican artist Antonio Martorell will host a workshop for artists to update the piece De aquí pa’llá/From Here to There – a mixed media installation inspired by La guagua aérea by Luis Rafael Sánchez that debuted at El Museo del Barrio in 2010.
This installation, by Antonio Martorell and his friends, reflects on the theme of Puerto Rican migration by air, and simultaneously serves as a screening venue for a video documentary by Ric Burns.
The seats of this theater-plane-bus are filled by passengers who travel through time and space between 1945 and 2015 and between San Juan and New York.
These passengers allow visitors to use their seats and take a peek into their lives, reflected in the window-family albums where photos and letters provide glimpses of their intimate journey, from here to there. Participating artists will create new passengers using chairs and clothing the migrants would have worn during that time period.
The workshop will be scheduled according to artist availability from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. through May 29, 2015.

Crear arte con Martorell
A partir de ahora hasta el 29 de mayo, el reconocido artista puertorriqueño Antonio Martorell será el anfitrión de un taller para artistas para actualizar la pieza De aquí pa’llá/From Here to There, una instalación de técnica mixta inspirada en La guagua aérea de Luis Rafael Sánchez, que debutó en El Museo del Barrio en 2010.
Esta instalación, de Antonio Martorell y sus amigos, reflexiona sobre el tema de la migración puertorriqueña por avión y al mismo tiempo sirve como un lugar de proyección para un video documental de Ric Burns.
Los asientos de este teatro-avión-autobús son llenados por pasajeros que viajan a través del tiempo y el espacio entre 1945 y 2015, y entre San Juan y Nueva York.
Estos pasajeros nos permiten usar sus asientos y echar un vistazo a sus vidas, que se reflejan en los álbumes familiares/ventanas donde las fotos y cartas ofrecen atisbos de su íntimo viaje, de aquí para allá. Los artistas participantes crearán nuevos pasajeros utilizando sillas y ropa que los migrantes desgastaron durante ese período.
El taller será programado de acuerdo con la disponibilidad del artista de 9 am a 5 pm hasta el 29 de mayo de 2015.
