Angelo Ortiz has seen the new skating rink at Van Cortlandt Park on Broadway from the beginning of its construction to the end.
“Every day, I drive by,” he said. “I’ve watched them build this. This is the first time I see the interior. I’m excited,” he said at the rink’s inauguration this past Mon., Nov. 19th.
He came by with his young daughter, Isabella.
Ortiz, who lives near the park, was eager to take her to the skating rink.
“Ice skating is one of the quintessential joys of winter, and we are delighted to open this rink in Van Cortlandt Park,” said Parks Commissioner Veronica White at the ribbon-cutting. “Skating is fun and great exercise. Thank you so much.”
The rink was the result of a license agreement between the City of New York and concessionaire Ice Rink Events, which also operates Queens’ World Ice Arena and City Ice Pavilion. The Rink will be operated by Ice Rink Events, and there will be activities planned for all ages. Hockey and skating lessons will be offered, and college students can look forward to a broomball. The Bryant Park Corporation donated $120,000 to upgrade the nearby electrical infrastructure to allow operation of the rink’s ice chillers.
Dan Biederman, the president of the Bryant Park Corporation, has born witness to all sorts of social displays on the ice.
“Look for a lot of high school kids holding hands, skating,” he said knowingly. He added with a laugh, “We have them now [at Bryant Park]. You’ll take them away, which is fine.”
Hand-holding is just one thing synonymous with skating.
Douglas Webster, the artistic director of Ice Theatre of New York (ITNY) hopes the theater will keep a presence at the rink: “We’ll be doing what we can to pitch in.”
ITNY combines dance and theater on the ice, and has community outreach and training programs.
“Skating rinks provide a great social opportunity that also incorporates exercise,” he added.
Skaters from ITNY regaled spectators with dazzling performances at the ribbon-cutting.
In one, a skater’s head hovered a foot about the ice as her partner, holding her by the feet, propelled her around and around like the rotators of a helicopter.
Aside from fun, the skating rink, which is the only public rink in the borough, will provide an alternative to youngsters not as interested in other athletic pursuits such as football or soccer.
“It will open horizons,” said Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz of the rink.
Adaline Walker, the vice-chairperson of Community Board 7, was thrilled, and said she was looking forward to bringing her grandchildren.
“My grandkids are visiting from Hawaii and this will be their first time on the ice,” she said. “I’m going to love that moment.”
Tues., Nov. 20 marked the first day the rink was officially open to the public.
By late afternoon, it was filled with experienced skaters and newbies alike, including Alissa Pérez, who was celebrating her 15th birthday at the rink.
It was her first time on the ice.
“This is awesome,” she gushed.
Unlike some frustrated beginners who spend a lot of time prone on the ice, Pérez reported that she only tumbled twice.
“I might come back next weekend,” she said, beaming.
Ebony Stewart and her daughter Sanaai also enjoyed being at the rink with the family, members of which had gathered together for Thanksgiving.
Six-year-old Sanaai wore a triumphant grin.
“I fell a lot of times,” she said.
Yet she was still standing.
“I love it here,” said Stewart, making note of a pastime that made for joy without breaking her wallet.”[And] I don’t have to pay Rockefeller prices.”
Admission will be $5 on weekdays, and $8 on weekends; skate rentals will be $5 a pair.
To get to the rink, take the #1 train to 242nd Street; the rink is on the east side of Broadway. There is also service on the Bronx bus #9.

Angelo Ortiz ha visto la pista de patinaje en el Parque Van Cortlandt desde el comienzo de su construcción hasta el final.

Ortiz, quien vive cerca del parque en Broadway estaba emocionado por la posibilidad de llevarla a la pista de patinaje.
Juntos miraron al nítido hielo que luego se llenará con entusiastas y aficionados del hielo.
“Patinar en hielo es una de las alegrías del invierno, y estamos encantados de abrir esta pista en el Parque Van Cortlandt”, dijo la Comisionada de Parques Veronica White.
La pista fue el resultado de un acuerdo de licencia entre la ciudad de Nueva York y el concesionario ‘Ice Rink Events’, quien también opera ‘Queens World Ice Arena’ y ‘City Ice Pavilion’. La pista será operada por ‘Ice Rink Events’, y habrá actividades planificadas para todas las edades. Hockey y lecciones de patinaje serán ofrecidas, y los estudiantes universitarios pueden esperar mucha diversión.
La Corporación de Parques Bryant donó $120,000 para mejorar la cercana infraestructura eléctrica y permitir la operación de los enfriadores de hielo.

ITNY incorpora baile y teatro en el hielo, y llega a la comunidad y tiene programas de entrenamiento.
“Las pistas de patinaje proveen una gran oportunidad social que también incorpora el ejercicio”, añadió.
Patinadores de ITNY le regalaron a los espectadores deslumbrantes presentaciones en el corte de cinta. En una, la cabeza de la patinadora oscilaba a casi un pie de distancia del hielo mientras su pareja, sosteniéndola por un pie, la impulsaba dándole vueltas como las hélices de un helicóptero.
A parte de ser divertido, la pista de patinaje, la cual es la única pista pública, proveerá una alternativa a los jóvenes no tan interesados en otras actividades atléticas.
Adaline Walker, el vicepresidente de la Junta Comunal 7, estaba emocionado y dijo que estaba deseando abrir los horizontes de su nieto.
“Mis nietos están visitando desde Hawaii y esta será su primera vez en hielo”, dijo ella. “Me va a encantar ese momento”.
El martes, 20 de noviembre marcó el primer día que la pista estaba abierta al público.
Para por la tarde, estaba lleno de experimentados patinadores y también novatos, incluyendo a Alissa Pérez, quien estaba celebrando su quinceañero en la pista.
Era su primera vez en el hielo.
“Esto es impresionante”, dijo.
A diferencia de muchos principiantes frustrados que pasaron mucho tiempo en el hielo, Pérez dijo que solo había tropezado dos veces.
“A lo mejor regreso el próximo fin de semana”, dijo ella radiante.
Ebony Stewart y su hija Sanaai también disfrutaron el estar en la pista con la familia, miembros que se habían reunido para el día de fiesta que se avecinaba.
Sanaai de seis años llevaba una risa triunfal.
“Me caí muchas veces”, dijo ella.
Aunque todavía estaba de pie.
“Me encanta aquí”, dijo una triunfante Stewart, tomando nota de un pasatiempo que se hizo para el disfrute sin sufrimiento. “Y no tengo que pagar los precios de Rockefeller”.
