UC Recap: October 22 – October 27

By Led Black

The first ever Inwood Hill Park Harvest Festival took place on Saturday, October 20th and of course the UC was there. Check out the awesome pictures of the festivities courtesy of the very talented Steven R. Hazlett.

Our intrepid reporter, Angela Bao Bei Bei, gave us a great article on one of the newest additions to the Uptown gastronomic landscape, Buunni Café (213 Pinehurst Avenue). Buunni Café is serving some of the best coffee from the country that is said to be the actual birthplace of coffee. They just opened up so make sure you stop by and show them some love. Our Monday Mood Music post featured a video by Tellie Floydd. On Friday, October 19th Tellie Floydd and his team put together an amazing showcase of Uptown Hip-Hop talent at the Empire Fashion Boutique (4795 Broadway). Word on the street is that the next one is going to be even bigger. Stay tuned…

This week also saw a Q&A with one of my heroes, the acclaimed author and modern Dominican icon, Junot Díaz. Speaking of Junot, we posted a really cool NBC video featuring Junot Díaz’s favorite haunts Uptown, which include La Marina (348 Dyckman Street) and La Casa Azul Bookstore (143 East 103rd Street). In addition, the always-astute John Paul Infante penned a post on upcoming new-school merengue artist, Dominante. Our good friend, Juan Bago, directed Dominante’s  new video and Rocio Santana ably plays the leading lady.

The Huffington Post ran an opinion piece by yours truly on the importance of the Latino vote. It starts off with a biting but nonetheless true quote from the hilarious John Leguizamo, “Latinos for Republicans – it’s like roaches for raid.” Remember folks; not voting is the equivalent of voting for Mitt Romney.

Did you know that on Thursday, October 25th the George Washington Bridge turned 81? We celebrated with an ode and a photo essay with pictures from Art By Dj Boy, Briana E. Heard, Paul Lomax, Emil Baez, Jay Franco, UptowneastNYC and My Inwood.net. The GWB is the world’s only 14-lane suspension bridge and an estimated 300,000 vehicles traverse her spans on a daily basis. Not bad for an octogenarian. Here’s looking at you GWB, happy belated birthday, we hope you like Dominican cake.
