UC Recap – August 22nd – August 27th

August 22nd – August 27th

Is it too early to talk about Halloween? Well, we have caught wind that a Haunted House is coming Uptown soon. I can’t say much more. In fact, I have already said too much! But word on the street is that a purveyor of left-of-center awesomeness will be opening up an expansive and eerie edifice in the coming days. If you want to find out more keep checking out the Uptown Collective for more info. Stay Tuned…

Langston Hughes is a Harlem giant. Langston is one of the most eloquent voices to come out of the African Diaspora. Well, the brownstone that was the home of the late great writer may soon be on the market. Heather Long of CNN Money penned a wonderful piece on the battle to save Langston Hughes’ home from gentrification. A Great Day in Harlem is one of the important images to ever come out of Harlem. The picture captures some of the most significant Jazz musicians of all time with a Harlem stoop as a backdrop. Sarah Goodyear of the NY Daily News beautifully breaks down how that iconic image came to be.

Bodega Pizza has been tantalizing foodies since it first opened its doors. Zachary Feldman of The Village Voice gives Bodega Pizza a resolute thumps up. Marc Santora of the NY Times reported on how the city is waging war Uptown on the Zika Virus.

Harlem Haberdashery is one of the flyest places Uptown, hands down. It is a citadel of cool and sartorial excellence. This past Wednesday they held their monthly Sip & Shop series with Chef Max Hardy. The food was absolutely delectable. The same goes for the libations provided by Hennessy. Shout out to Young Palate for the live artwork. Next time you need to spruce up the wardrobe make sure you hit up Harlem Haberdashery.

The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA), in collaboration with New YorkPresbyterianThe Allen Hospital, is looking for submissions for NoMAA’s next exhibition titled Portraits of Community: People, Places. The deadline is Friday, September 9th. Choreographer extraordinaire and Uptown’s own Hollywood put together a really cool concept video for Kehlani’s CRZY. The video was shot in the world famous Dyckman Park. Hit up the site to check it out.
