By Carolina Pichardo No matter how often I tell myself it’s not going to sneak up on us this year, Halloween still ends up creeping up on us – each year. Last year, my daughter had her heart set on being the Pink Ranger. After visiting a few stores to no avail, we decided to order it online. It was almost two weeks before the date, and we didn’t ask for the express shipping. We should have. Her costume didn’t make it on time. This year, we’re on a similar timeline, only we’re hitting up every store we got. We’re also being far more proactive to make sure the holiday turns out well. Here are some suggestions: First stop: our local pharmacies, toy stores, and 99-cent stores for ideas and a creative spur. Believe it or not, it worked for my nephew, who wanted to be the nameless robot from the popular music group, LMFAO. He got a box, added some tape, cut out the eyes, and Voila!, he has his homemade Halloween costume. It was an instant hit, no chart-topping music needed. And how much time do our children spend looking at cereal boxes while sleepily having their Cheerios in the morning? One young mom we know created a do-it-yourself costume for her son based on the early morning meal. She took a regular box from work, decorated it with a wild bird in the front and, just like that, an instant “Cocoa Puffs” cereal box costume for her son was made. You can pick from Tony the Tiger, maybe Fred from the Flintstones, or even Buzz from Honey Nut Cheerios. For those not wanting to create their own costumes this year, there are tons of options in the stores – as we soon found out. It’s difficult shopping for a costume when you’re not sure you want yet. There are so many cool options to pick from, including characters you’ve long gone forgotten. That’s what happened when we hit the pop-up Halloween Costume Warehouse on 5546 Broadway in the Bronx. This store usually opens up around this time of the year, and has a large selection of costume and decorations for families. There, we befriended Elu Saavedras and Jaime Mendoza, who tried to help us narrow down the many choices. We looked through the superhero aisles, pulled out a Spiderman outfit, and ventured into the witches and goblins section. And for those of you who also want to jump into the trick-or-treating, there were tons of outfits for young moms, such as Robin and Bat-Woman or Spider Girl. For families with newborns and babies, there was also a large selection of infant costumes, including an adorable “Where the Wild Thing Are” creature. The inventory was, happily, dizzying. Although we haven’t made a final selection, we’re on a mission to keep searching. “Maybe we can search online again,” I suggested to my tired tween as we continued our walk. “No way,” she said, surely recalling last year’s no-go. So our search continues until we find the costume that howls out (maybe literally) to her, “This is it!” How is your Halloween shopping coming along? El año pasado, mi hija quería ser ‘Pink Ranger’. Luego de visitar algunas tiendas en vano, decidimos ordenarlo ‘online’. Eran casi dos semanas antes de la fecha, y no pedimos envío expreso. Debimos hacerlo. Su disfraz no llegó a tiempo. Este año, estamos en una fecha similar, solo que estamos visitando cada tienda que vemos. También hemos sido más proactivos para asegurarnos que el día festivo salga bien. Aquí algunas sugerencias: Primera parada: nuestras farmacias locales, tiendas de juguetes y tiendas de 99 Centavos para ideas y estímulo creativo. Lo crea o no, funcionó para mi sobrino, quien deseaba ser el robot sin nombre del popular grupo de música, LMFAO. Consiguió una caja, le añadió algo de cinta adhesiva, cortó los ojos y ahí está! tuvo su disfraz del Día de las Brujas hecho en casa.
