NYC Health + Hospitals recognized for LGBTQ care

NYC Health + Hospitals has announced that 21 locations in its health system have been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for excellence in non-discrimination training and commitment to inclusive care for LGBTQ patients and their families. “We train our staff to have zero tolerance for discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and we honor open visitation rights for all LGBTQ patients,” said Dr. Ram Raju, President and Chief Executive Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals. “We will continue to provide quality and affordable care to all New Yorkers.” The 21 network locations recognized by the Human Rights Campaign include four in the Bronx, seven in Manhattan, six in Brooklyn, two in Queens and one in Staten Island. The first NYC Health + Hospitals facility to earn the designation, in 2013, was NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in East Harlem, which houses the LGBT Health Center. The center provides medical and psychosocial care, including women’s health, men’s health, transition services including hormone therapy, PrEP, HIV and STD screening and treatment, adolescent care, social work and behavioral health services, and general primary care. NYC Health + Hospitals is also launching an LGBTQ awareness campaign among the workforce and patients at the network’s hospitals, neighborhood health centers and nursing homes. Pins, posters and postcards with the slogan “We Are An Ally” will be distributed to staff at NYC Health + Hospitals locations. The largest public health system in the nation, NYC Health + Hospitals recently began planning for the implementation of non-discriminatory signs for single and multi-stall bathrooms, with a rollout beginning at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in East Harlem.
