Nature and Birding Walk
Learn to identify and value the flora and fauna of the eastern slope of Fort Tryon Park with Leslie Day, author of Field Guide to the Street Trees of New York City and Field Guide to the Natural World of New York City. The Broadway side of Fort Tryon Park has benefitted from the planting of over 45,000 plants, trees and shrubs by NYC Parks and the Fort Tryon Park Trust over the past 6 years. On Sat., Jul 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., learn more about how they create an environment for an abundance of fauna in the park. Please bring binoculars, but please do not bring your pets.

A People’s History of Harlem
The 115th Street Library will be showing Minnie the Moocher on Fri., Jul. 19th at 2:00 p.m. In this 1983 documentary, Cab Calloway recalls the Harlem jazz clubs of the 1930’s and 1940s’. Rare archival footage and film clips produced for video jukeboxes in the late 1930’s are used to tour Harlem’s renowned clubs from the Savoy to the world famous Cotton Club. Included in the documentary are performances from Fats Waller, Dorothy Dandridge, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Cab Calloway himself.
This screening is part of “A People’s History of Harlem: Our Neighborhood Oral History Project,” which works to both document and preserve Harlem history through the stories of people who have experienced it. It will collect oral histories of people who have lived or worked in the surrounding Harlem neighborhood and train community members to conduct these interviews. Interviews will be collected up until mid-September. Both longtime and more recent residents are invited to share their neighborhood stories, documenting Harlem’s past and present history. Interviews will be preserved at the Milstein Division, available in a circulating collection, and accessible at the New York Public Library website.

Vision of Spain by Joaquín Sorolla
Vision of Spain by Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla is currently on display at the Hispanic Society of America. In 1911, Sorolla was commissioned by Archer Milton Huntington, the founder of The Hispanic Society of America, to paint the mural Vision of Spain, which was completed in 1919 and installed at the Society in 1926. Unprecedented in both scope and scale, the painting cycle represents eleven regions of the country and focuses on rural life and its customs, emphasizing traditional dress. Sorolla dedicated eight years to this ethnographic study, a period chronicled in his hundreds of preparatory sketches, gouaches, oil studies, and full-scale paintings. The resulting work has become an important map of diverse regional identity, representing Spain. Vision of Spain is displayed in the Bancaja Gallery.

The Union Offensive of 1864
On Sat., Aug. 16th, join the National Park Service for a program detailing the Union offensive of 1864, which helped guarantee a northern victory. This program will include discussions of Grant’s Overland Campaign, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and Sheridan’s Valley Campaign, and will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Visitor Center.
In April 1864, President Abraham Lincoln placed General Ulysses Grant in command of the Union’s war effort. Grant’s primary mission was to defeat or force the surrender of Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The remainder of rebel forces would all surrender within next two months.
Grant’s Tomb is located on West 122nd Street and Riverside Drive.

Tai Chi
On Sun, Jul. 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., join a free Tai Chi class. No experience is necessary. You will be guided through the movements by an experienced instructor. Individual attention is given to each student to maximize his or her progress toward a complete understanding of Tai Chi Chuan. The first class is free, but there will be $7 fee per class after the first class. The class will meet at meet at 190th Street subway station of the “A” train (Fort Washington entrance) and move to an outdoor location.

Vision of Spain por Joaquín Sorolla

Tai Chi

Los asistentes serán guiados a través de los movimientos por un instructor experimentado. Se prestará atención individual a cada estudiante para maximizar su progreso hacia una comprensión completa del Tai Chi Chuan. La primera clase es gratuita, pero habrá una cuota de $7 dólares por clase después de la primera. La clase se reunirá en la estación del metro de la calle 190, del tren “A” (entrada Fort Washington) y se trasladará a un lugar al aire libre.
