Story by Gregg McQueen When the Grammy Awards ceremony is held in Los Angeles next month, the rockers and rollers will include two named Rodríguez. The Rodríguez Brothers, a Latin jazz group led by brothers Rob, an Inwood resident, and Michael Rodríguez, are featured among the nominees. The group’s fourth record, Impromptu, is up for Best Latin Jazz Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, which will take place on February 15. Impromptu features original compositions with Afro-Cuban Jazz and Latin American influences. All songs were written by Rob, who plays piano, and Michael, who plays trumpet. The brothers, whose family hails from Ecuador and Cuba, said they were floored to learn of their Grammy nomination. “It was a shock and a surprise to hear about it,” said Rob. The brothers grew up in Miami, where Rob learned to play piano at age five. “My father was a professional musician,” he said. “There was always music in our house.” Rob said he knew since childhood that he’d be performing music professionally with brother Michael, who resides in Queens. “We’ve been practicing together since we were kids,” Rob remarked. “It’s like a telepathy between us.” After graduating college, the brothers moved to New York City in 2002. In addition to leading their own successful act, the Rodríguez Brothers have also performed as sidemen for artists such as Charlie Haden, Eddie Palmieri, Wynton Marsalis, David Sánchez and Quincy Jones. “We’ve been very lucky that we’ve been able to work with great people,” Rob said. “Some of those guys are my heroes.” Rounding out the Rodríguez Brothers’ band are Carlos Henríquez, Ludwig Alfonso and Samuel Torres, all New York City residents. The group has toured internationally and performed at renowned events such as the Monterey and Newport Jazz Festivals. Rob said that the brothers are keeping a level head about their Grammy nod. “The recognition from the music industry is nice,” he said. “But win or lose, it won’t really affect us.
