The Washington Heights artist hesitated. He never felt comfortable taking photos of homeless people. When the man insisted, de las Mercedes simply gave him money. But the man said, “A deal’s a deal. Take the photo!” He struck a boxer’s stance as de las Mercedes snapped a picture. The Champ is a painting based on that chance encounter. Ofertorio, Greetings From Yankee Stadium is another work in the same style. It is on display at the Fifth Bronx Latin American Art Biennial, together with another piece titled Cuervo Azul The Fable of Omar, Tommy, Lucinda and The Hidden Muse. The exhibit is located at several different venues in the borough, with works by many Latin American artists including Scherezade García, Patrick McGrath Muñiz and Ezequiel Taveras. The show that included de las Mercedes’ work is at the BronxArtSpace. Its theme is “I am one of those people that…” Curators Alexis Mendoza and Luis Stephenberg are interested in the way artists think and the steps in their creative process. “Our intention is to have the opportunity to explore some of today’s local, national and international social issues such as: migration, women’s rights, political conflicts, different types of discrimination, and issues that reflect on the autonomy of the opinion. We want to show self-representation of the artist’s way of thinking,” the curators wrote on show’s website. Based on a photo taken at Yankee Stadium, de las Mercedes’ Ofertorio, Greetings From Yankee Stadium features a young woman handing out flyers for the famed Bronx strip club. She stands tall, with an exuberant smile. The Champ and Ofertorio, Greetings From Yankee Stadium have something in common, said the artist. “They both have a sense of pride—they say, ‘I am somebody. Don’t count me out,’” he said. “They show a kind of resilience in life.” Resilience is an important element in de las Mercedes’ life too. After a fire destroyed his apartment in 2014, he went to the New York Public Library (NYPL) to get work done. As he looked around and saw homeless people using the library as a headquarters for job hunting, reading and basic shelter, he remembered the man who demanded the photo. De las Mercedes stopped painting after the fire. He had no paints, no canvases and no camera. But he still had the photo. Eventually he started working in a whole new style. He took cell phone photos of friends, strangers, and people he knew from the neighborhood. He blew up the photos and added them to canvas. He stripped the subjects out of their environment and transformed them into iconic images. He layered in paint, scraps of notepapers, collaged words and his own abstract hieroglyphics. The subjects seemed to emerge from an ethereal sea full of disembodied thoughts and frenetic feelings. The resulting series of images manifested as patron saints of joy, love and survival of everyday life. De las Mercedes is a prolific artist, and the arrival of his first child, Luca, has not slowed his pace. As he spends time with his son, he’s noticed a shift in his work during the past 15 months. “There’s been a more playful element. La serie resultante de imágenes se manifestó como patronos de la alegría, el amor y la supervivencia de la vida cotidiana. De las Mercedes es un artista prolífico, y la llegada de su primer hijo, Luca, no ha disminuido su ritmo.
