Four Nuyorican poets will come together as part of the “BLOOM: The Reading Series at Hudson View Gardens”. All four poets have been involved with the Nuyorican Poets Café, which, over the past 40 years, has emerged as one of the country’s most highly respected arts organizations and has become an acclaimed forum for innovative poetry, music, hip hop, video, visual arts, comedy and theatre.
Nancy Mercado, Caridad de la Luz, and Edwin Torres will be hosted by Emanuel Xavier, who will also be reading from his own work.

The reading will be held on Sun., Dec. 7^th at 5 p.m. in the lounge of historic Hudson View Gardens, the 1924 Tudor building in Washington Heights designed by George Frederick Pelham. There is a suggested donation of $7. Wine and light fare will be served.
“BLOOM: The Reading Series at Hudson View Gardens” was launched in September, 2013, and has hosted poets and fiction writers including Tim Seibles, Honor Moore, Peter Cameron, Michael Klein, and Jason Koo. Readings are held the first Sunday of the month from September to May (except January).

Nancy Mercado
Poet, writer, educator, and activist Nancy Mercado is the author of It Concerns the Madness (2000) and editor of the children’s anthology if the world were mine (2003). She earned a BA from Rutgers University, an MA from New York University, and a PhD in English from SUNY-Binghamton. Latino Leaders Magazine has hailed Mercado as “one of the most celebrated members of the Puerto Rican literary movement in the Big Apple.”

Caridad de la Luz
Spoken word poet, actor, singer-songwriter, and community activist Caridad de la Luz, or “La Bruja,” was born and raised in the Bronx, and attended SUNY-Binghamton. De la Luz’s poetry explores social justice and Nuyorican identity. When she debuted at the Nuyorican Poets Café in 1996, de la Luz adopted the persona of “La Bruja” (“The Witch”). She has also shared her work on HBO’s Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam, and at the American Museum of Natural History. She has produced the album Brujalicious and the solo comedy show Boogie Rican Blvd.

Edwin Torres
A self-proclaimed “lingualisualist” rooted in the languages of sight and sound, Edwin Torres is a poet whose highly acclaimed performances and live shows combine vocal and physical improvisation and theater. He is the author of the collections Ameriscopia (2014), One Night: Poems For The Sleepy (2012), Yes Thing No Thing (2011), and In the Function of External Circumstances (2010), among others.

Emanuel Xavier
Emanuel Xavier is the author of the novel, Christ Like, the poetry collections, Pier Queen, Americano: Growing up Gay and Latino in the USA, and If Jesus Were Gay & other poems. Xavier was named an LGBT History Month Icon by the Equality Forum, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to advance national and international gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights through education. .He is recipient of the Marsha A. Gómez Cultural Heritage Award, a NYC Council Citation, a World Pride Award, and a finalist for Lambda Literary Awards and an International Latino Books Award.

Cuatro poetas Nuyorican se reunirán como parte de “BLOOM: The Reading Series at Hudson View Gardens”. Los cuatro poetas han estado involucrados con el Nuyorican Poets Café, el cual se ha convertido en los últimos 40 años en una de las más respetadas organizaciones artísticas del país y en un foro aclamado por la poesía innovadora, la música, el hip hop, los videos, las artes visuales, la comedia y el teatro.
