For a limited time, small businesses and nonprofits in Washington Heights and Inwood can go green – at no cost.
The free energy efficiency program is being spearheaded by the Hispanic Federation in partnership with Con Edison, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), the Association for Energy Affordability, and the Office of State Senator Adriano Espaillat.
The initiative targets non-profits and small businesses, both retail and service, located in Washington Heights and Inwood. Applicable zip codes are: 10023, 10033, 10034, and 10040 with an average peak monthly electric demand under 110 kW.
The program, now in its third phase, was the focus of a breakfast roundtable held by the Chamber of Commerce of Washington Heights and Inwood at the Isabella Geriatric Center on Nov. 12th.
“One of our most important priorities at the Chamber is to ensure that every one of our small businesses takes advantage of the opportunities to save on costs, become more efficient and modernize infrastructure,” said Sandra Harris, the Chamber’s President. “It will build a greener, and stronger, network of service that benefits the entire community.”
“It’s been a great collaboration between Con Edison and the Hispanic Federation,” said Frankie Miranda, Senior Vice President of the Hispanic Federation.
The organization is subsidizing part of the costs that would normally be incurred by small businesses opting to make the change.
“The Hispanic Federation will be paying 30%, Con Edison will be paying 70%,” he explained.
The offer is first-come, first-serve, and funds are to be exhausted by the end of the year.
“For a limited time only, businesses in four zip codes in Washington Heights and Inwood can participate in the green program for free,” said Marianne Castillo, Outreach and Marketing Coordinator for Con Edison’s Green Team.
“Funds are being exhausted. Call right away,” she urged.
The “green” aspect of the initiative is that it would create more energy-efficient businesses in the targeted zip codes and reduce energy costs for business owners by providing new, retrofitted lighting equipment. It would also be a money-saver.
“Our objective is to use less energy, save people money, and help save the environment,” said Castillo.
“Our small business energy-efficiency program provides excellent incentives for customers looking to reduce their energy costs and protect the environment,” said John H. Banks, Con Edison’s Vice President of Government Relations in a statement.
Any business or organization interested in applying must complete and submit an application that will assess eligibility for a free energy assessment to determine whether the energy-efficient lighting upgrades can be made.
If approval is granted, a contractor will move to make the installations.
It is estimated that the program has enrolled 454 participants, and that participating businesses have saved approximately $2.6 million.
Local businesses already enrolled include Coogan’s Restaurant on 169th Street and Broadway.
“[It is] one of the best programs I’ve been involved with in 30 years. They were so efficient. Everything was impeccably done,” said owner Peter Walsh. “Everything was done was at 100%. It has definitely been a win-win.”

Por tiempo limitado, los pequeños negocios y organizaciones no lucrativas en Washington Heights e Inwood pueden ser verdes, sin costo alguno.
El programa de eficiencia de energía gratuita está siendo encabezado por la Federación Hispana, en colaboración con Con Edison, la Corporación de Desarrollo Económico de la ciudad de Nueva York (NYCEDC por sus siglas en inglés), la Asociación para la Energía Asequible, y la oficina del senador estatal Adriano Espaillat.
La iniciativa está dirigida a organizaciones no lucrativas y pequeños negocios, tanto minoristas como de servicios, ubicados en Washington Heights e Inwood. Los códigos postales aplicables son: 10023, 10033, 10034, 10040 y con una demanda eléctrica pico promedio mensual inferior a 110 kW.
El programa, ahora en su tercera fase, fue el centro de un desayuno-mesa redonda celebrado por la Cámara de Comercio de Washington Heights e Inwood en el Centro Geriátrico Isabella el 12 de noviembre.
“Una de nuestras prioridades más importantes en la Cámara es asegurar que cada uno de nuestros pequeños negocios aproveche las oportunidades para ahorrar en costos, ser más eficientes y modernizar la infraestructura”, dijo Sandra Harris, presidenta de la Cámara. “Va a construir una más verde, y más fuerte, red de servicio que beneficie a toda la comunidad”.
“Ha sido una gran colaboración entre Con Edison y la Federación Hispana,” dijo Frankie Miranda, primer vicepresidente de la Federación Hispana.
La organización subsidia parte de los gastos en los que normalmente incurrirían los pequeños negocios que opten por realizar el cambio.
“La Federación Hispana estará pagando el 30%, Con Edison pagará el 70%”, explicó.
La oferta se atenderá en orden de llegada y los fondos deben ser agotados antes del fin de año.
“Por un tiempo limitado, los negocios en cuatro códigos postales en Washington Heights e Inwood pueden participar en el programa verde de forma gratuita”, dijo Marianne Castillo, coordinadora de Difusión y Mercadeo del Equipo Verde de Con Edison.
“Los fondos se están agotando. Llame de inmediato”, instó.
El aspecto “verde” de la iniciativa es que creará más empresas de eficiencia energética en los códigos postales específicos y reducirá los costos de energía para los propietarios de los negocios al proporcionarles nuevos equipos modernizados de iluminación. También sería un ahorro de dinero.
“Nuestro objetivo es utilizar menos energía, ahorrar dinero a la gente y ayudar a salvar el medio ambiente”, dijo Castillo.
“Nuestro programa de eficiencia energética para pequeños negocios ofrece excelentes incentivos para los clientes que buscan reducir sus costos de energía y proteger el medio ambiente”, dijo John H. Banks, vicepresidente de Relaciones Gubernamentales de Con Edison en un comunicado.
Cualquier empresa u organización interesada en aplicar deberá completar y presentar una solicitud que calificará la elegibilidad para una evaluación de energía gratuita para determinar si las mejoras en la iluminación de bajo consumo se pueden hacer.
Si se otorga la aprobación, un contratista se desplazará para hacer las instalaciones.
Se estima que el programa ha inscrito a 454 participantes y que las empresas participantes han ahorrado aproximadamente $2.6 millones de dólares.
El negocio local que ya está inscrito es el restaurante Coogan’s en la calle 169 y Broadway.
“Es uno de los mejores programas en los que he estado involucrado en 30 años. Fueron muy eficientes y todo se hizo impecablemente”, dijo el dueño Peter Walsh. “Todo lo hecho estuvo al 100%. Definitivamente ha sido una situación de ganar-ganar”.
