“Lady Day” will be returning to Harlem’s Apollo Theater later this year — in hologram form.
The theater announced that it will implement permanent hologram technology featuring famed chanteuse Billie Holiday to be used during its daytime programming, which includes theater tours and educational offerings for school groups and other visitors.
An exclusive deal with Hologram USA, developers of the technology, will make the Apollo the first theater in the country to offer hologram presentations on an ongoing basis.
The first display will be the Holiday hologram show, expected to debut in late November.
Jonelle Procope, the Apollo’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said the technology could be used to create collaborations between legendary artists and more contemporary performers.
“The possibilities inherent in this initiative, pairing this technology with the Apollo’s legacy and role with emerging artists from around the globe, are quite exciting,” she remarked.
“We’re looking forward to connecting our audiences with the artistry of great musicians, including Billie Holiday, through the magic of this technology,” added Procope.
The Apollo has a deal with Holiday’s estate to recreate the singer’s likeness, and use her voice in the show. Lady Day was a nickname bestowed upon her by jazz saxophonist Lester Young, who was a friend and frequent accompanist.
Holiday, considered one of the great jazz vocalists of all time, made nearly 30 appearances on the Apollo stage throughout her career, including her debut at age 19.
In addition to solo concerts, she performed at the theater with other iconic artists such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.
Holiday was inducted in the Apollo’s Walk of Fame earlier this year, in celebration of the singer’s 100th birthday.
Hologram USA, the company behind the famed holographic resurrection of rapper Tupac Shakur at the Coachella Music Festival in 2012, has patented its own technology that creates high-definition holograms. It has announced plans to introduce a holographic program featuring legendary comedians at the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, NY.

The Apollo Theater’s 2015-16 artistic season will showcase more than 100 performances, including the popular Amateur Night. The first presentation of the season is “Breakin’ Convention,” a festival that brings together hip-hop dance artists from around the globe.
