It’s a brick house.

Healthfirst celebrated the opening of its first standing community office in Washington Heights with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wed., Nov. 20.

The new brick-and-mortar home of the health insurance provider is intended to offer a new go-to resource both for potential and existing Healthfirst members.

On Wednesday, the quiet of early evening dusk gave way to a festive atmosphere as scores of visitors crowded into the storefront at 1467 Saint Nicholas Avenue.

Green and white balloons spanned the sidewalk, while lively music was played.

Healthfirst already has 950,000 members throughout New York State, and 90,000 hail from Washington Heights.

“It’s one-stop shopping for our members,” said Pat Wang, the Chief Executive Officer and President of Healthfirst in New York.

“It really does signal something different to the community to have a brick-and-mortar,” she said.

“It’s right on the ground, where the rubber meets the road,” agreed State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who, together with Assemblymember Gabriela Rosa, visited the office for the inauguration.

Angel Rosario, who will be managing the office, said Healthfirst had been looking for a site in the neighborhood for a while.

“We had to make sure we got the right location,” said Rosario.

He estimated that there are at least 20 doctors or clinics within a ten-block radius.

Ben Gómez will serve as the site’s manager for enrollment on the health exchange.

As such, Gómez will be tasked with enrolling residents that don’t qualify for Medicare or Medicaid.

One specific draw of being in Washington Heights, he said, was that the area offers a diverse population.

“There are people who qualify for Medicaid, people who qualify for Medicare, and people in between—and people who commute,” he said.

Gómez will have a lot of work to do in the coming months.

Before the beginning of the Open Enrollment period on Oct. 1, officials predicted that 7 million people would enroll in a health plan; in order for premiums to stay low, 2.7 of those enrollees have to be young, healthy, singles between the ages of 18 and 35 (known as “young invincibles”).

So far, just over 100,000 people have enrolled in the exchange during its first month; there is no indication yet as to how many are in the young invincible category.

Gómez could not predict how many “young invincibles” will enroll in a plan with Healthfirst.

“If I had that answer, I’d be a millionaire,” he said.

But he did know that there are at least 1.8 million people in New York City without health insurance.

He said he plans to target young people through social media, and incentivize them with such benefits as gym reimbursements and preventative care that some of Healthfirst’s plans offer.

“Young people who feel immortal should also get insurance,” warned Assemblymember Gabriela Rosa.

State Senator Espaillat agreed.

“He thought he was invincible (but) my own son get appendicitis when he was in his 20’s,” he recalled to The Manhattan Times.

The younger Espaillat is now searching for a different plan as he is expecting a baby—the State Senator’s first grandchild.

Gómez said he was looking forward to working out of the Washington Heights office and reaching out to people in the community.

“The diversity is great here,” he enthused. “Everyone’s so open.”

And that wasn’t the only consideration.

“There’s great food!”

Es una casa de ladrillos.

Healthfirst celebró la apertura de su primera oficina permanente de la comunidad en Washington Heights con una ceremonia de corte de cinta el miércoles 20 de noviembre. El hogar de ladrillo y mortero del proveedor de seguro de salud, tiene como intención el ofrecer un recurso al cual acudan tanto los miembros ya existentes de Healthfirst, como aquellos potenciales.

El miércoles, el tranquilo crepúsculo dió paso a una festiva atmósfera mientras grupos de visitantes se aglomeraron en el establecimiento del 1467 de la avenida St. Nicolas.

Verdes y blancos globos bordeaban la acera, mientras sonaba la animada música. Healthfirst cuenta yá con 950,000 miembros por todo el estado de Nueva York, y 90,000 proceden de Washington Heights.

“Es una fuente única de elección para nuestros miembros”, dijo Pat Wang, Oficial Principal Ejecutiva y Presidente de Healthfirst en Nueva York. “El tener una presencia física realmente envía una señal diferente a la comunidad”, dijo ella.

“Es realmente el momento de la verdad” coincidió el senador estatal Adriano Espaillat, quien conjuntamente con la asambleísta Gabriela Rosa visitó la oficina para la inauguración.

Angel Rosario, quien estará administrando la oficina, dijo que Healthfirst había estado procurando un local en el vecindario desde hace tiempo.

“Teníamos que asegurarnos de conseguir el lugar adecuado”, dijo Rosario.

El estimó que existen por lo menos 20 doctores o clínicas dentro de un radio de 10 manzanas.

Ben Gómez servirá como el gerente del local para la inscripción en el intercambio de salud.

Como tal, Gómez tendrá la tarea de inscribir a los residentes quienes no califican para Medicare o Medicaid.

Una ventaja específica de estar en Washington Heights, dijo el, lo fue que el área ofrece una población diversa.

“Existen personas que califican para Medicaid, personas que califican para Medicare, personas que pueden recibir ambos y personas que se trasladan”, dijo el.

Gómez tendrá mucho trabajo en los próximos meses.

Antes del inicio del período de Inscripción Abierta el 1ro de octubre, los funcionarios pronosticaron que 7 millones de personas se inscribirían en un plan de salud; con la finalidad de que las primas se mantengan bajas, el 2.7 de esos inscritos tienen que ser jóvenes, saludables, solteros entre las edades de 18 y 35 (conocidos como los “jóvenes invencibles”.)

Hasta el momento, solo un poco más de 100,000 personas se han registrado en el intercambio durante su primer mes; no existe indicación aún sobre cuántos están entre estos jóvenes que están en la categoría de invencible.

Gómez no pudo pronosticar cuántos jóvenes invencibles se inscribirán en el plan con Healthfirst.

“Si yo tuviese la respuesta, sería millonario”, expresó el.

Pero el si sabía que existen por lo menos 1.8 millón de personas en la Ciudad de Nueva York sin seguro de salud.

El dijo que tiene pensado focalizar a gente jóven a través de los medios sociales, e incentivarles con beneficios tales como reembolso para el gimnasio y el cuidado preventivo que ofrecen algunos de los planes de Healthfirst.

“La gente jóven que se siente inmortal debería también obtener un seguro”, advirtió la asambleísta Gabriela Rosa.

El senador Espaillat estuvo de acuerdo.

“El pensó que era invencible (pero) mi propio hijo sufrió de apendicitis cuando en sus 20 años”, recordó el al The Manhattan Times.

El jóven Espaillat está ahora en búsqueda de un plan diferente ya que está esperando un bebé, el primer nieto del Senador estatal.

Gómez dijo que esperaba trabajar desde la oficina de Washington Heights y llegar a la gente de la comunidad.

“La diversidad aquí es enorme”, dijo entusiasmado. “Todo el mundo es tán abierto”. Y esa no fue la única consideración.

“La comida es fabulosa”!
