NYCFC sign Spanish soccer superstar

This past Mon., June 2nd, New York City FC (NYCFC) announced that the team, New York’s Major League Soccer franchise, had signed its first player, Spanish superstar and World Cup winning forward David Villa.
The announcement was made by NYCFC Chief Business Operator Tim Pernetti, Scouting Director Claudio Reyna and Head Coach Jason Kreis.
“This is a historic and exciting moment for the City family and the building of New York City Football Club,” said NYCFC CEO Ferran Soriano. “I’m sure New Yorkers will enjoy watching him play for their city.”
Fresh off winning the “La Liga” title in his native Spain, Villa served this past season as a heralded forward for Atletico Madrid.
Having played for Valencia and Barcelona in addition to Atletico Madrid, Villa has amassed two “La Liga” titles, the UEFA Champions League trophy, and a prestigious World Cup win for his native Spain in 2011.
Villa is also the first Spanish player to score more than 50 international goals in one season.

“We have spent the last five months scouting for players, especially for our first player,” said Reyna. “I’m proud to say that David Villa is that man.”
Villa and NYCFC members said they consider putting the club on the map a number one priority.
“I want to try and help MLS continue to grow, through playing, working hard and scoring goals, and at the same time try and make New York City FC become the best team in Major League Soccer,” said Villa.
NYCFC Head Coach Kreis was equally enthusiastic that Villa was the premier player they needed.
“David Villa is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished soccer players and best strikers in the world.”
“[He] will be a shining example of what it will mean to be a New York City player and a leader for us on and off the field,” Kreis added.
An oft-discussed topic during the conference was how Villa would contribute his talents and time off the field as well.
“He’s been at the highest level with the clubs he’s been with,” said Reyna. “He was not going to shy away from the challenge of being a critical part of this team. He’s enthusiastic about working with the club and with the fans.”
In response to queries from The Manhattan Times/The Bronx Free Press, Reyna said he was the perfect choice with which to launch the club.
“We feel that he’ll have a big impact,” said Reyna. “Because of his Spanish background, we think there’ll be a big push from the community. He’s really enthusiastic about creating a buzz, really interested in building this from the club up.”
“It’s a real honor that the people who formed the club thought of me,” replied Villa. “It’s definitely one of the main reasons why I liked the project so much. It’s an honor to be the first player and a flag-bearer of New York City.”
Signed to a three-year commitment, Villa will don his customary Number 7 jersey, albeit in NYFC powder blue, and play its inaugural season at Yankee Stadium, where the football club will reside for the next two years.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have played there before with the national team but now I’ll be playing there as part of the home team,” said Villa with a smile.

El pasado lunes 2 de junio, el New York City FC (NYCFC) anunció que el equipo, la franquicia de la Liga Mayor de Fútbol de Nueva York, había firmado a su primer jugador, la superestrella española y delantero ganador de la copa del mundo, David Villa.
El anuncio fue hecho por el director de operaciones de negocios de NYCFC, Tim Pernetti; el director de reclutamiento, Claudio Reyna y director técnico, Jason Kreis.
“Este es un momento histórico y emocionante para la familia de la ciudad y la construcción del New York City Football Club”, dijo el CEO de NYCFC, Ferran Soriano. “Estoy seguro de que los neoyorquinos podrán disfrutar de verlo jugar para su ciudad”.
Recién llegado de ganar el título de “La Liga” en su España natal, Villa sirvió en la temporada pasada como un proclamado delantero para el Atlético de Madrid.

Habiendo jugado en el Valencia y el Barcelona, además del Atlético de Madrid, Villa ha acumulado dos títulos “La Liga”, el trofeo de la UEFA liga de campeones, y una prestigiosa victoria en la copa mundial para su España natal en 2011.
Villa es también el primer jugador español en anotar más de 50 goles internacionales en una temporada.
“Hemos pasado los últimos cinco meses buscando jugadores, especialmente para nuestro principal jugador”, dijo Reyna. “Estoy orgulloso de decir que David Villa es ese hombre”.
Villa y los miembros de NYCFC dijeron que consideran el poner el club en el mapa la prioridad número uno.
“Quiero tratar de ayudar a la MLS a seguir creciendo a través del juego, trabajando duro y marcando goles, y al mismo tiempo haciendo que New York City FC se convierta en el mejor equipo de la Major League Soccer”, dijo Villa.
Kreis, director técnico principal de NYCFC estaba igualmente entusiasmado que Villa sea el jugador premier que necesitaban.
“David Villa es, sin duda, uno de los jugadores futbolísticos más consumados y de los mejores delanteros del mundo”.
“[Él] será un brillante ejemplo de lo que significará ser un jugador de la ciudad de Nueva York y un líder para nosotros, dentro y fuera del campo”, añadió Kreis.
Un tema altamente discutido durante la conferencia fue cómo Villa contribuiría con su talento y su tiempo fuera de la cancha también.
“Él ha estado al más alto nivel en todos los clubes con los que ha jugado”, dijo Reyna. “No iba a rehuir el reto de ser una parte fundamental de este equipo. Él se siente entusiasta sobre el trabajo con el club y con los aficionados”.
En respuesta a las preguntas de The Manhattan Times/The Bronx Free Press, Reyna dijo que él era la opción perfecta con la cual lanzar el club.
“Sentimos que tendrá un gran impacto”, dijo Reyna. “Debido a sus antecedentes españoles, creemos que habrá un gran impulso de la comunidad. Se siente muy entusiasta acerca de crear alboroto, está muy interesado en construir esto desde el club”.
“Es un verdadero honor que las personas que formaron el club pensaran en mí”, respondió Villa. “Definitivamente es una de las principales razones por las que me gustó tanto el proyecto. Es un honor ser el primer jugador y un abanderado en la ciudad de Nueva York”.
Firmado por un compromiso de tres años, Villa vestirá su habitual jersey con el número 7, aunque en azul polvo del NYFC, y jugará su temporada inaugural en el estadio Yankee, donde el club de fútbol residirá durante los próximos dos años.
“He tenido la suerte de haber jugado ahí antes con la selección nacional, pero ahora voy a estar jugando como parte del equipo de casa”, dijo Villa con una sonrisa.
