The Word Up Community Bookstore is a multi-language community bookshop and arts space in Washington Heights, “committed to preserving and building a neighborhood in which all residents help each other to live better informed and more expressive lives, using books as an instrument of reciprocal education and exchange, empowering not only themselves, but their community.” The all-volunteer staff hosts literary readings, concerts, workshops, tutoring, and other activities for kids and adults. It is also an incredibly cool space where books rule, reading and sharing are a must, and a lot of laughter happens.

- Now in its fifth anniversary season, the People’s Theatre Project, together with fellow non-profit organizations, schools and local businesses, has brought dynamic and interactive theater experiences to, well, everyone. From teen theater workshops to bilingual plays produced by tenants and toddlers with a lot to say, the People’s Theatre Project has indelibly enlivened Northern Manhattan’s arts scene.

- The Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NMCIR) has protected the rights of immigrants in Northern Manhattan for over 30 years. NMCIR offers free citizenship assistance, family petitions, voter registration and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. “NMCIR needs our support. There are so many individuals who have no one to help them, no one to guide them through this incredibly difficult process,” says Pulitzer Prize-winning author and NMCIR supporter Junot Díaz. “I think the work they do is absolutely essential.” Currently, NMCIR is raising funds on an Indiegogo project with a “$40,000 in 40 Days campaign that will help 140 eligible immigrants become U.S. Citizens.

- The Dominican Women’s Development Center, a non-profit organization located in Washington Heights, has assisted families for a quarter of a century. Founded by nine Dominican women who identified the need for Latinas to organize around critical issues such as sexism and discrimination, high dropout rates, limited access to health care services, high teenage pregnancy, and high poverty rates, El Centro, as it is known, has continued to advocate for all women and families.

- The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) has worked since 2007 to support artists and arts organizations throughout Northern Manhattan. The non-profit arts service organization launched with the support of the Hispanic Federation and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) with a unique mission: celebrate, sustain and cultivate uptown’s vibrant arts scene. Its many programs have included partnerships with the Viva Broadway! imitative of The Broadway League, which has brought hundreds of underserved families to the Great White Way, and the annual Uptown Arts Stroll, which shines a well-deserved spotlight on all the creative talents en el Alto.

- Ahora en su quinta temporada de aniversario, el Proyecto Teatro del Pueblo, junto con organizaciones colegas sin fines de lucro, escuelas y empresas locales, ha llevado experiencias dinámicas e interactivas de teatro a, bueno, todo el mundo. - La Coalición del Norte de Manhattan por los Derechos de los Inmigrantes (NMCIR por sus siglas en inglés) ha protegido los derechos de los inmigrantes en el Norte de Manhattan por más de 30 años. NMCIR ofrece asistencia gratuita para ciudadanía, peticiones familiares, inscripción de votantes y cursos de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL por sus siglas en inglés). “NMCIR necesita nuestro apoyo. Fundada por nueve mujeres dominicanas que identificaron la necesidad de que las latinas se organizaran en torno a temas críticos como el sexismo y la discriminación, las altas tasas de deserción escolar, el acceso limitado a servicios de salud, el alto índice de embarazo adolescente y las altas tasas de pobreza, El Centro, como se le conoce, continúa abogando por todas las mujeres y las familias.
