“Over there, in white! Do you see him?”

A crowd had gathered outside the baseball fields of Harlem RBI, a non-profit organization that provides the youth of East Harlem with athletic and mentoring programs. Harlem RBI started in 1991 when volunteers cleared a trash-strewn field on East 100th Street to make way for two baseball diamonds, now known as the Field of Dreams.

The talents of Harlem RBI’s young players normally draw onlookers when they are on the field, but this afternoon, there was another sight to behold: red-headed royalty.

The Royal Foundation, a philanthropic venue for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (also known as Prince Will and Princess Kate) and the red-headed Prince Harry of Wales, will be partnering with Harlem RBI.

This past Tues., May 14th, Prince Harry visited Harlem RBI to launch Project Coach, a multi-year continuum of coaching opportunities for youth age 13 and up.

“We are thrilled to partner with The Royal Foundation on Project Coach,” said Rich Berlin, Harlem RBI Executive Director. “Coaching is at the core of Harlem RBI’s mission. At Harlem RBI, youth grow not only as baseball and softball players, but also as leaders on and off the field.”

The royal visit drew an eager crowd.

“Harry! Over here! HARRY!” they called.

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira also joined the prince on his trip to the ballpark.

Teixeira is a familiar face at Harlem RBI, where he serves as a board member.

Although the group gathered was kept at a distance from the fields by security and police personnel, they were far from uninvolved.

His presence generated commentary from young and old; some were downright giddy.

“I feel so silly,” commented one smiling woman, as she waited in a thick throng.

Despite the distance, Prince Harry’s trademark red hair and blushing visage were clearly visible above the park’s chain-link fence.

Silvia Csearcy, who happened upon the scene after a doctor’s appointment, said she could not pass up the opportunity to see Prince Harry.

“I love the royals,” said Csearcy, who watched Princess Di and Prince Charles’ wedding, as well as Prince William and Princess Kate’s.

“He’s tall. Oh, he’s tall,” said Csearcy. The Prince did in fact tower above his security detail.

While most in the crowd were excited, Paul Riggels had a different sensation: something closer to anxiety.

Riggels is a bartender at an Irish bar and is from a town right on the border of Northern Ireland, which was partitioned from the rest of Ireland in 1921 after the Irish War of Independence. It has since been run by the British.

It would be a source of embarrassment for Riggels, he explained, if his Irish compatriots believed he had sought to see the Prince of Wales.

“The lads back home would not be happy,” he said.

In his defense, Riggels came upon the scene by accident, as he lives in an apartment building across the street.

“I just came down to see the commotion,” he said.

But for those far removed from the troubles of Northern Ireland, the prince’s visit was cause for celebration.

Orlando Santiago, who lives in the neighborhood, bore witness to the Prince’s entrance to East Harlem in his cavalcade.

“I thought he was just going to get out of the car [and enter the field], but no, he got out onto the street and went into the projects. It was pretty cool.”

Harlem RBI is located on the grounds of the George Washington Houses. Rather than be escorted closer to the field’s entrance, the prince walked down the length of the block, to the happy surprise of East Harlemites, including Santiago.

“The students got something to talk about tomorrow at school,” he said; he also sported a Yankees jacket. “I don’t know if he ever came to Spanish Harlem [before], but it’s nice that he came here to speak to the kids. It’s exciting for the kids, and good for Spanish Harlem.”

The youths who spent time with the prince concurred.

“We’ll remember this forever,” said Sebastian Segura, who, along with cohort Rachel Santiago, presented the prince with a Harlem RBI uniform.

“I won’t be surprised to see him wear the uniform. It’s a good uniform,” noted Segura. The youths, who have all been playing baseball for a number of years, offered the prince pointers as he made the rounds during field exercises.

“I didn’t hear him say anything about baseball,” observed Harlem RBI youth Dashawn Doctor. “But he did a good job swinging the bat.”

During his at bat, Prince Harry made contact with the ball three times—and his third hit would have been a home run had it not been for the field’s netting.

But the most important thing about his visit wasn’t his at-bat, said Santiago.

“The most exciting thing is how the field improved,” said the East Harlem native. “-At first, this field was rubble, but now we have a prince playing on it.”

“¡Por ahí, en blanco! ¿Lo ves? ”

Una multitud se había reunido afuera de los campos de béisbol de Harlem RBI, una organización sin fines de lucro que ofrece a los jóvenes del este de Harlem una serie de programas deportivos y tutorías.

Harlem RBI se inició en 1991 cuando voluntarios limpiaron un campo lleno de basura en el este de la calle 100 para dar paso a dos diamantes de béisbol, ahora conocido como el campo de los sueños.

El talento de los jugadores jóvenes de Harlem RBI inscritos normalmente traían espectadores cuando estaban en el campo, pero esta tarde, hubo otro espectáculo digno de contemplarse: la realeza pelirroja.

La Fundación Real, un institución filantrópica para el duque y la duquesa de Cambridge (también conocidos como el príncipe Will y la princesa Kate) y el pelirrojo Príncipe Harry de Gales, se asociarán con Harlem RBI.

El pasado martes 14 de mayo, el Príncipe Harry visitó Harlem RBI para lanzar Proyecto Coach, una serie continua de varios años de oportunidades de entrenamiento para los jóvenes de 13 años en adelante.

“Estamos encantados de la asociación de la Fundación Real con en el Proyecto Coach”, dijo Rich Berlín, Director Ejecutivo de Harlem RBI. “El coaching es el núcleo de la misión de Harlem RBI. La visita real atrajo a una multitud entusiasta.

“¡Harry! ¡Por aquí! ¡HARRY!”, lo llamaban.

La primera base de los Yankees de Nueva York, Mark Teixeira, también se unió al Príncipe en su viaje al estadio.

Teixeira es una cara conocida en Harlem RBI, donde se desempeña como miembro del consejo.

Aunque el grupo reunido fue mantenido a cierta distancia de los campos por el personal de seguridad y la policía, estaban lejos de no estar involucrados.

Su presencia generó comentarios de jóvenes y viejos, algunos eran francamente vertiginosos.

“Me siento tan tonta”, comentó una mujer sonriente, mientras esperaba en una multitud espesa.

A pesar de la distancia, la marca registrada del pelo rojo y el ruborizado rostro del Príncipe Harry eran claramente visibles por encima de la valla de enlace del parque. Silvia Csearcy pasó por ahí al salir de una cita médica cercana. Ella dijo que no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de ver al Príncipe Harry.

“Me encanta la familia real”, dijo Csearcy, que vio la boda de Lady Di y el Príncipe Carlos, así como la del Príncipe Guillermo y la Princesa Kate.

“Él es alto. Oh, es alto”, dijo Csearcy.

El Príncipe de hecho pasó por encima de su equipo de seguridad.

Mientras que la mayoría de la gente se emocionaba, Paul Riggels tenía una sensación diferente, algo más cercana a la ansiedad.

Riggels es un bar tender de un bar irlandés y es de un pueblo en la frontera de Irlanda del Norte, que se repartió en el resto de Irlanda en 1921 después de la Guerra de Independencia irlandesa. Desde entonces, ha sido dirigido por los británicos.

Sería una fuente de vergüenza para Riggels, explicó, si sus compatriotas irlandeses supieran que él había tratado de ver al Príncipe de Gales.

“Los muchachos en casa no serían felices”, dijo.

En su defensa, Riggels llegó a la escena por casualidad, ya que él vive en un edificio de apartamentos al otro lado de la calle.

“Sólo vine a ver la conmoción”, dijo.

Pero para aquellos alejados de los problemas de Irlanda del Norte, la visita del Príncipe era motivo de celebración.

Orlando Santiago, que vive en el vecindario, fue testigo de la entrada del Príncipe al Este de Harlem en su cabalgata.

“Pensé que estaba a punto de salir del coche [y entrar en el campo], pero no, salió a la calle y entró en los proyectos. Fue muy bueno”.

Harlem RBI está situado en los terrenos de las casas George Washington. En lugar de ser escoltado más cerca a la entrada del campo, el Príncipe caminó a lo largo de la cuadra, para la feliz sorpresa de los oriundos del este de Harlem Oriente, incluyendo a Santiago.

“Los estudiantes tienen algo de qué hablar mañana en la escuela”, dijo, él también lucía una chaqueta de los Yankees.

“No sé si alguna vez vino al Harlem hispano [antes], pero es bueno que viniera aquí para hablar con los niños. Es emocionante para los niños, y bueno para el Harlem hispano”.

Los jóvenes que pasaron tiempo con el Príncipe estuvieron de acuerdo.

“Vamos a recordar esto para siempre”, dijo Sebastián Segura, quien, junto con Rachel Santiago, presentaron a Harry con un uniforme Harlem RBI.

“No me sorprendería que él llevara el uniforme. Es un buen uniforme”, señaló Segura.

Los jóvenes, que todos han estado jugando béisbol por un número de años, ofrecieron los punteros al Príncipe mientras hacía la ronda, mientras que los estudiantes corrieron a través de los ejercicios de campo.

“No he oído decir nada de béisbol”, observó el joven de Harlem RBI Dashawn Doctor.

“Pero hizo un buen trabajo manejando el bate.”

Durante su turno al bate, Harry bateó la bola tres veces, y su tercer ataque habría sido un jonrón de no haber sido por la malla del campo.

Pero lo más importante acerca de la visita del Príncipe Harry no era su turno al bate, dijo Santiago.

“Lo más interesante es cómo el campo mejoró. Al principio este campo era puro escombro, pero ahora tenemos un Príncipe jugando en él”.
