Hispanic Federation hosts annual gala

The Hispanic Federation (HF) hosted its annual spring gala on April 19.

This year’s event, held at the American Museum of Natural History, drew more than 900 attendees.

Using the theme “Rising Together,” the star-studded bash was an evening dedicated to celebrating achievement in humanitarianism, corporate leadership, advocacy and community engagement, placing a particular focus on relief efforts in response to natural disasters in Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Honorees included artist Ricky Martin, who received the HF Humanitarian Award.

Gala Chair Lin-Manuel Miranda presented Martin with his award, in recognition of his work to end human trafficking and rebuild Puerto Rico post-Hurricane María.

Other honorees included Comcast NBC Universal, Atlantic Records and the Immigrants: We Get the Job Done Coalition, an alliance of organizations from across the U.S. that work to protect vulnerable immigrant populations.

HF Founder Luis Miranda extolled the work of the immigrant groups honored.

“They shine a light and lift all of us up,” he observed. “They say ‘presente.’”

Actors Ana Villafañe and Anthony Ramos served as the evening’s emcees.

Among those appearing at gala were actor and salsa legend Rubén Blades, actress Luna Lauren Vélez, Grammy Award winner Tommy Torres and former New York Giants wide receiver Víctor Cruz.

Each year, the event helps raise money to help HF’s network of community-based organizations.

The 2018 gala raised $2.3 million, a new record.

“Tonight was a night to celebrate our special community – a collective that together shares dreams and lifts up millions of lives across our nation and beyond,” said Jose Calderón, President of the Hispanic Federation. “Our benefit gala paid tribute and recognized the work and impact of spectacular institutions and organizations, including 900 community and business leaders who were our guests this evening. By standing up for a fair, just and inclusive America, they are making sure we rise stronger than ever before.”

The Federation also announced the launch of a partnership with the Ricky Martin Foundation to rebuild homes in the Puerto Rico town of Loiza through a $250,000 matching grant, which, combined, equals a total social investment of $500,000 for recovery efforts.

La Federación Hispana (HF, por sus siglas en inglés) organizó su gala anual de primavera el 19 de abril.

El evento de este año, celebrado en el Museo Americano de Historia Natural, contó con más de 900 asistentes.

Usando el tema “Rising Together”, la fiesta repleta de estrellas fue una noche dedicada a celebrar los logros en humanitarismo, liderazgo corporativo, defensa y participación comunitaria, poniendo especial énfasis en los esfuerzos de ayuda en respuesta a los desastres naturales en Puerto Rico y México.

Los homenajeados incluyeron al artista Ricky Martin, quien recibió el Premio Humanitario HF.

El presidente de la Gala, Lin-Manuel Miranda, entregó a Martin su premio, en reconocimiento a su labor para terminar con la trata de personas y reconstruir Puerto Rico después del Huracán María.

Otros homenajeados incluyeron a Comcast NBC Universal, Atlantic Records y la Coalición de Inmigrantes: We Get the Job Done, una alianza de organizaciones de todos los Estados Unidos que trabaja para proteger a las vulnerables poblaciones de inmigrantes.

Luis Miranda, fundador de HF, elogió la labor de los grupos de inmigrantes homenajeados.

“Nos arrojan luz y nos levantan”, observó. “Ellos dicen: presente”.

Los actores Ana Villafañe y Anthony Ramos fungieron como maestros de ceremonia de la noche.

Entre los que asistieron a la gala estuvieron el actor y la leyenda de la salsa Rubén Blades, la actriz Luna Lauren Vélez, el ganador del Premio Grammy Tommy Torres y el ex receptor de los New York Giants Víctor Cruz.

Cada año, el evento ayuda a recaudar dinero para apoyar la red de organizaciones comunitarias de HF.

La gala de 2018 recaudó $2.3 millones de dólares, un nuevo récord.

“Esta fue una noche para celebrar a nuestra comunidad especial: un colectivo que comparte sueños y levanta millones de vidas en toda nuestra nación y más allá”, dijo José Calderón, presidente de la Federación Hispana. “Nuestra gala de beneficios rindió homenaje y reconoció el trabajo y el impacto de espectaculares instituciones y organizaciones, incluidos 900 líderes comunitarios y empresariales que fueron nuestros invitados esta noche. Al defender unos Estados Unidos equitativos, justos e inclusivos, se están asegurando de que nos levantemos más fuertes que nunca”.

La Federación también anunció el lanzamiento de una asociación con la Fundación Ricky Martin para reconstruir hogares en el pueblo de Loiza, Puerto Rico, a través de una subvención conjunta de $250,000 dólares que, combinados, equivale a una inversión social total de $500,000 dólares para esfuerzos de recuperación.
