May 28 – June 2
For this week’s Kickstarter Spotlight we featured the photographic exhibit Faces of Hope, which is a series of stark and searing portraits of people that have survived, and eventually thrived over, tragic circumstances.
The man behind the lens is none other than the super talented Jay Franco.
In an accompanying book, Ankita T. Pandya and Pie Soto tell the stories of the people behind the portraits. By the way, my wife and cancer thriver (as she likes to say) Eileen Z. Fuentes is one of the subjects of this poignant exhibition.
Who knew that not only does Uptown have a Canoe Club but that the Inwood Canoe Club, founded in 1902, is the oldest canoe and kayak club in all of Manhattan? The Inwood Canoe Club offers short kayak trips to the public on Sundays, from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.
Their 2012 program of Sunday open houses kicked off recently.
The World Science Festival commenced on May 30th at the United Palace with a soaring performance of Icarus at the Edge of Time.
The ubiquitous Art By Dj Boy was there to document both occasions.
Congrats go out to the East Willy B folks for generating 50 K in 50 days for their groundbreaking web series. Check out my Q&A with the multi-talented Flaco Navaja, who is one of the lead actors in East Willy B.
For this week’s Throw Back Thursday, being that Thursday was the kick off for the 2012 Uptown Arts Stroll at the United Palace, it is only fitting that we take a look back at last year’s Stroll.
The Uptown Arts Stroll only gets better and this year is jam-packed full of awesome events over 40+ venues. So as of May 31st, get ready for a month-long celebration of the arts and culture of Uptown.
Nutcracker Inc in tandem with the good folks at Le Chéile (839 West 181st Street) have deemed June, Nutcracker Awareness Month.
For the entire month of June, Le Chéile will be selling Nutcrackers with a portion of the proceeds going to the making of our documentary on the legendary street libation.
And get this; Saturday, June 30th will be Nutcracker Awareness Day at Le Chéile, which will be a veritable Nutcracker festival.
