Fighting for responsible solutions that will strengthen Social Security and Medicare

Medicare and Social Security provide health and retirement security to millions of Latinos, but the programs face long-term financial challenges that must be addressed. Yet, too many politicians in Washington say the only answer is to cut the benefits you’ve earned or force you to pay more. AARP is on your side – fighting to protect Medicare and Social Security for you and your children and grandchildren.
Last year, AARP launched You’ve Earned a Say – a national conversation about the future of Medicare and Social Security. We engaged 6.5 million people, helping them make their voices heard in Washington. The message they sent was clear – we need responsible solutions to Medicare and Social Security, not harmful cuts that will hurt you and your family.
Right now, there is a proposal on the table in Washington that would hurt Latino seniors, women, people with disabilities and veterans who’ve sacrificed so much for this great country. It is called chained CPI – a fancy Washington term that really means cutting Social Security benefits to reduce the deficit – costing the average senior $2000 over the next ten years alone. The cut would start now and get larger every year; hurting seniors the most as they age and spend down their savings. The proposal would also hurt women because they tend to live longer and earn less money; people with disabilities, who tend to receive benefits for a longer period of time, and disabled veterans who would see their veterans and Social Security benefits cut. Most older Americans agree with AARP and stand against chained CPI, regardless of political views. A recent survey shows 84% of voters 50 and older are against cutting Social Security benefits to reduce the nation’s deficit.
Some politicians in Washington are also talking about harmful cuts to Medicare, such as adding new copayments on top of the premiums, deductibles and other costs Medicare doesn’t pick up. AARP believes we need responsible solutions that keep Medicare strong by reducing costs throughout the health care system.
We can start by clamping down on high costs from drug companies, improving coordinated care for patients, and reducing and eliminating waste, fraud and abuse of resources, like over-testing.
More effective care coordination will reduce medical errors; help prevent dangerous, preventable hospital readmissions; ensure patients are getting recommended care, and save taxpayer dollars. By creating systems that connect doctors and health care facilities more effectively and make better use of information technology, we can ensure that patients receive safer, higher quality care.
For most Latino seniors, Medicare and Social Security are critical to their health and financial security. For some, they are the only financial and health care resources available to them. Those living in multigenerational families help contribute to their households with their Social Security income. Medicare benefits also mean less stress on loved ones because seniors have means to help cover their own health care needs.

Medicare y el Seguro Social brindan seguridad en la salud y la jubilación a millones de latinos, pero los programas enfrentan desafíos financieros a largo plazo que se deben solucionar. Sin embargo, demasiados políticos en Washington D. C. dicen que la única respuesta es recortar los beneficios que te has ganado o forzarte a pagar más. AARP está de tu lado, luchando para proteger Medicare y el Seguro Social para ti, tus hijos y nietos.
El año pasado, AARP lanzó Tu Voz es Tu Derecho, una conversación nacional acerca del futuro de Medicare y el Seguro Social. Involucramos a 6.5 millones de personas para ayudarles a expresar sus opiniones en Washington D. C. El mensaje que enviaron fue claro: necesitamos soluciones responsables para Medicare y el Seguro Social, no recortes que te perjudicarán a ti y a tu familia.
Ahora existe una propuesta sobre la mesa en Washington D. C. que perjudicaría a todos los latinos: a los adultos mayores, a las mujeres, a las personas con discapacidades y a los veteranos que se han sacrificado tanto por este gran país. Se llama ”Chained CPI” (índice de precios al consumidor encadenado), un término extravagante acuñado en Washington D. C. que, en realidad, significa recortar los beneficios del Seguro Social para reducir el déficit, con un costo de $2,000 para adulto mayor promedio durante los próximos 10 años. El recorte se implementaría ahora y aumentaría todos los años, perjudicando cada vez más a los adultos mayores a medida que envejecen y se reducen sus ahorros. La propuesta también perjudicaría a las mujeres, que suelen vivir más y ganar menos dinero; a las personas con discapacidades, que tienden a recibir beneficios durante más tiempo, y a los veteranos con discapacidades, que verán un recorte en sus beneficios para veteranos y del Seguro Social. La coordinación más eficaz de la atención reducirá los errores médicos, ayudará a prevenir readmisiones hospitalarias peligrosas, asegurará que los pacientes reciban el cuidado recomendado y les ahorrará dinero a los contribuyentes. Al crear sistemas que conecten mejor a los médicos y a los centros de salud, y usen mejor la tecnología de la información, podemos garantizar que los pacientes reciban una atención mejor y más segura.
Para la mayoría de los adultos mayores latinos, el Seguro Social y Medicare son críticos para su salud y seguridad financiera. Para algunos, son los únicos recursos financieros y de atención médica disponibles. Aquellos que viven en familias multigeneracionales ayudan a contribuir a sus hogares con sus ingresos del Seguro Social. Los beneficios de Medicare también representan menos estrés para los seres queridos ya que los adultos mayores tienen recursos para ayudar a cubrir sus propias necesidades médicas.
