Driver arrested in fatal Marble Hill hit-and-run
A Manhattan man has been arrested and charged in the February hit-and-run death of a 38-year-old Columbia University employee in Marble Hill.
Michael Longo, 58, is accused of running over Daniel Cabrera, a father of one and Columbia University budget manager, as he crossed Broadway at West 225th Street shortly before 7 p.m. on February 23.
According to prosecutors, Longo was driving a 2007 Dodge Magnum when he hit Cabrera, then sped away, leaving Cabrera for dead.
The vehicle, which was not registered to Longo, was later recovered in Washington Heights.
“The incident was captured on video surveillance, and after the collision the defendant did not stop the vehicle, and went right over the Broadway Bridge into Manhattan,” said Bronx Assistant District Attorney Sharon Adler.
At a June 2 arraignment, Longo was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting.
Longo, who pleaded not guilty, faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Cabrera, a resident of Cortlandt Manor in Westchester County, was on his way to the Marble Hill Metro-North station at the time of the incident, authorities said.
Because the incident occurred within 500 yards of Bronx County, jurisdiction falls to the Bronx District Attorney’s office.
Longo has a lengthy rap sheet, including a 17-year prison stint for an attempted murder conviction, as well as convictions for firearms and assault charges.
At the arraignment, Adler requested that the defendant be remanded, but Supreme Court Justice George Villegas set bail at $25,000 bond or $15,000 cash.
The case has been adjourned until August 25.

Un hombre de Manhattan ha sido arrestado y acusado por el atropello y fuga en febrero que mató a un empleado de 38 años de edad de la Universidad Columbia en Marble Hill.
Michael Longo, de 58 años, está acusado de atropellar a Daniel Cabrera -padre y gerente de presupuesto de la Universidad Columbia- mientras cruzaba Broadway en la calle 225 oeste, poco antes de las 7 pm, el 23 de febrero.
Según los fiscales, Longo conducía un Dodge Magnum 2007 cuando golpeó a Cabrera, luego se alejó a toda velocidad, dejando a Cabrera por muerto.

Longo, quien se declaró no culpable, enfrenta hasta siete años de prisión si es declarado culpable.
Cabrera, vecino de Cortlandt Manor en el condado de Westchester, estaba en camino a la estación Metro-North de Marble Hill al momento del incidente, dijeron las autoridades.
Debido a que el incidente se produjo a menos de 500 yardas del condado del Bronx, la jurisdicción corresponde a la oficina del fiscal del distrito del Bronx.
Longo tiene un prontuario extenso, incluyendo un período de 17 años de prisión por una condena por intento de asesinato, así como condenas por armas de fuego y cargos de asalto.
En la lectura de cargos, Adler pidió que se remitiera al acusado, pero el juez de la Suprema Corte George Villegas fijó una fianza de $25,000 dólares en bonos o $15,000 en efectivo.
