Adriano Espaillat officially had his ticket punched to Washington, becoming the first Dominican to serve in the U.S. Congress, while the two women of Dominican heritage he had championed also earned seats in the State Legislature. After winning the Democratic primary in his bid to succeed retiring Congressman Charles Rangel, Espaillat won over 87 percent of the vote this Tues., Nov. 8th to soundly defeat challengers Robert Evans (Republican), Daniel Rivera (Green Party) and Scott Fenstermaker (Transparent Government Party). Following his landmark victory, Espaillat tweeted, “I am deeply grateful to the people of the 13th Congressional District for electing me to serve as their next Congressman.” Marisol Alcántara won Espaillat’s vacated seat in the 31st District of the State Senate, by garnering more than 77 percent of the vote to beat out challengers Melinda Crump (Republican), Julia Willebrand (Green Party) and John Toro (Conservative Party). Carmen De La Rosa, who ran unopposed, will represent the 72ndAssembly District. While campaigning, Alcántara and De La Rosa proclaimed 2016 as “the year of the woman,” and said they hoped to make history along with Espaillat to usher in a new wave of Latinos in government. Alcántara did just that, as she becomes the first Dominican woman to serve in the State Senate. After the September primary, De La Rosa said that district voters were desperate for fresh voices in the legislature. “I think they want to see people who are willing to stand up and fight for their needs,” she said.
