The city’s Finest will soon find form in a new fashion.
This past Fri., Feb. 4th, the de Blasio administration has announced that it would invest $7.3 million to upgrade 13,000 bulletproof vests for the officers of the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The allocation will be reflected in the budget for the current fiscal year.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, Commissioner Bill Bratton and Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito gathered with local elected officials and community leaders at the 34th Precinct to make the announcement.
“The hardworking men and women who make up the NYPD put their lives on the line each day to protect our city’s residents,” said de Blasio. “We are allocating funds to this fiscal year so we can start buying vests immediately, providing our brothers and sisters in blue with life-saving protection right away.”
According to city records, bulletproof vests have saved the lives of 87 officers.
“I have seen bulletproof vests offer my officers lifesaving protection from potentially fatal gunfire,” said Commissioner Bill Bratton. “In the line of duty, our officers brave perilous circumstances to keep our neighborhoods safe—and we owe them the highest quality of protection as they perform this valiant task.”
Referred to as “the best in the market” by the Commissioner, the new vests are 25 to 30% lighter than the ones currently in use, making them more comfortable. The vests will also be custom-fitted to the body of each officer.
The taking of measurements and fittings will begin in March, and distribution will take place in mid-May, announced Bratton.
Vests will not be replaced all at once, but in phases.
The first set of replacements will be for vests that have already surpassed the 5-year warranty period. All remaining NYPD vests – every officer has one single vest – will be replaced as they reach the 5-year mark.
“It is an extraordinary effort in the part of the city,” said Bratton, stressing the speed with which city officials had responded to requests for greater departmental resources. “I want to thank Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito, and our City Councilmembers for making these vests a top priority and quickly committing this funding.”
“Everyday, [the] NYPD goes out to make our city safe,” added Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, who promised to continue to “advocate for resources for the NYPD.”
Among the local elected officials present were Congressman Charles Rangel, State Senator Adriano Espaillat, Assemblymember Guillermo Linares, Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez and Councilmember Vanessa Gibson, Chair of the Public Safety Committee.
“A single vest can save a life and protect a family for years to come,” said de Blasio. “These vests will make a big difference.”

El pasado viernes 4 de febrero, la administración de Blasio ha anunciado que invertirá $7.300 millones para mejorar 13,000 chalecos antibalas para los oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Nueva York (NYPD por sus siglas en inglés).
La distribución se verá reflejada en el presupuesto para el año fiscal en curso.
El alcalde Bill de Blasio, el comisionado Bill Bratton y la presidenta Melissa Mark-Viverito se reunieron con funcionarios locales electos y líderes comunitarios en la Comisaría 34 para hacer el anuncio.
“Los hombres y las mujeres trabajadoras que componen el NYPD ponen sus vidas en peligro cada día para proteger a los residentes de nuestra ciudad”, dijo de Blasio. “Estamos asignando fondos este año fiscal para que podamos empezar a comprar chalecos de inmediato, proporcionando a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en azul la protección que necesitan para salvar vidas”.
De acuerdo con registros de la ciudad, los chalecos antibalas han salvado la vida de 87 oficiales.
“He visto que los chalecos antibalas ofrecen a mis oficiales protección contra disparos potencialmente fatales”, dijo el comisionado Bill Bratton. “En el cumplimiento de su deber, nuestros valientes oficiales enfrentan circunstancias peligrosas para mantener nuestros vecindarios seguros y les debemos la más alta calidad de protección cuando realizan esta valiente tarea”.
Conocidos como “los mejores en el mercado”, los nuevos chalecos son de 25 a 30% más ligeros que los que se utilizan actualmente, haciéndolos más cómodos. Los chalecos también serán hechos a la medida para el cuerpo de cada oficial.
La toma de medidas y pruebas comenzarán en marzo y la distribución será a mediados de mayo, anunció Bratton.
Los chalecos no serán sustituidos todos a la vez, sino en fases.
El primer conjunto de reemplazos será para los chalecos que ya han superado el período de garantía de 5 años. Todos los chalecos restantes del NYPD -cada oficial tiene un solo chaleco- serán reemplazados a medida que alcancen la marca de 5 años.
“Es un esfuerzo extraordinario de parte de la ciudad”, dijo Bratton, haciendo hincapié en la velocidad con la que las autoridades municipales respondieron a las peticiones de mayores recursos. “Quiero agradecer al alcalde de Blasio, la presidenta Mark-Viverito y a nuestros concejales municipales, por hacer de estos chalecos una prioridad y rápidamente comprometer este financiamiento”.

“Un solo chaleco puede salvar una vida y proteger a una familia en los años venideros”, dijo de Blasio. “Estos chalecos harán una gran diferencia”.
