The STAR Senior Center in Washington Heights had a recent freshening-up — in late March, two AmeriCorps team leaders, joined by a few local volunteers, applied new coats of paint to the center’s activity space, meeting room and hallways. Founded in 1975, the center provides a hot lunch, activities and social services for about 150 local seniors per day from Monday through Friday. The spruce-up was done through Habitat for Humanity’s Brush with Kindness program, which paints interiors and murals for public schools, playgrounds and community centers throughout the city. “The place hasn’t looked this good in years,” said the senior center’s Executive Director David Johnson. Brush with Kindness volunteers Sam Winter and Anna Darling spent five days at STAR to help complete the project. “It’s nice to be able to give something back to the city,” said Darling. “These projects make us feel connected to these communities we’re helping out in. Winter said the volunteer paint projects afforded the opportunity to assist a variety of diverse neighborhoods. “It’s a chance to be a part of communities I wouldn’t necessarily have been able to see otherwise,” he remarked. “I see many different sides of New York.” STAR, which stands for Seniors Together for Action and Recreation, uses a 8,500-square-foot space under St. Elizabeth’s Church on West 187th Street. Seniors there partake in bingo, yoga, dance, health and nutritional workshops, and receive referrals to needed services. “We have a relationship with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and they will send professionals over to speak with our seniors about nutrition and good health,” said Johnson. A back patio provides an outdoor recreation and barbecue space for the warmer weather. In addition to offering meals and activities, Johnson said the center represents “the development of social capital” in the community. “It gets seniors out of the house,” Johnson explained. “They get to interact with each other, when many would otherwise stay sitting home alone.” The STAR Senior Center is located at 650 West 187th Street, New York, NY. El Centro de Envejecientes STAR en Washington Heights tuvo un reciente refrescamiento – a finales de marzo, dos equipos de líderes de AmeriCorps, junto a algunos voluntarios locales, aplicaron nuevas capas de pintura al espacio del centro de actividades, salón de reuniones y pasillos. Fundado en el 1975, el centro provee, de lunes a viernes, almuerzo caliente, actividades y servicios sociales a cerca de 150 envejecientes locales por día. El arreglo fue hecho a través del programa ‘Habitat for Humanity’s Brush with Kindness’, el cual pinta interiores y murales a escuelas públicas, jardines de juegos y centros comunales a lo largo de la ciudad. “El lugar no se ha visto tan bien en años”, dijo el director ejecutivo del centro David Johnson.
