Unlucky in Love
This year, Valentine’s Day lands one day after the unluckiest of calendar dates —Friday the 13th.
Actress Elyssa Renee Ramírez was inspired by the connection. She created Unlucky in Love, a musical take on the blissful notion of Valentine’s Day romance, or lack thereof.
“Valentine’s Day isn’t a happy occasion for everybody, and this year it falls right after a day typically associated with horror,” said Ramírez.
Unlucky in Love will be performed on February 13 at 11:30pm at 54 Below, a Manhattan supper club.
“When the show starts, it’s Friday the 13th, and when it ends, it’s Valentine’s Day,” said Ramírez. “I thought it would be fun to play off the connection between the two, and that was the basis for the show.”
As Friday the 13th bleeds into Valentine’s Day, Ramírez and her fellow cast members will perform a variety of original songs, as well as more familiar radio hits and musical theater favorites.
“It’s mostly a comedy,” explained Ramírez. “We definitely use humor to explore what it’s like to be in the unluckier end of the love spectrum.”
Joining Ramírez for the cabaret-style show will be Daniel Everidge, a veteran actor who has appeared in Grease on Broadway, along with several other young and aspiring performers. The 54 Below venue is located in the basement of the former Studio 54 nightclub.
“It’s a really cool place that has a bit of a clandestine, speakeasy vibe,” explained the actress.
“Seeing a show there feels like being in a musical theater secret society.”
Ramírez, the oldest of six children in a family of Puerto Rican descent, grew up in West Farms Square.
She fell in love with theater after seeing her first Broadway show while a student at Horace Mann School.
“I was always an obnoxious, attention-seeking kid,” said Ramírez with a laugh. “Being onstage just came naturally to me.”
She received her degree in Musical Theatre from the State University of New York at Geneseo and has been in numerous stage productions since.
Most recently, Ramírez appeared in Royal Fables by Nicholas Luckenbaugh at the Access Theatre, and Vestments of the Gods at the New York Fringe Festival. Ramírez said her next project following Unlucky in Love will be a new musical titled Pinwheel, which she described as a dark love story set in 1920’s New York City, backed by a jazz soundtrack. But for now, Ramírez is anxiously and happily awaiting the debut of Unlucky in Love, just days away.
“No matter what type of relationship you’re in, it’s the type of show people will be able to relate to,” said Ramirez.” People should be prepared to laugh and have a good time.”
