UC Recap – September 3 – September 8

September 3 – September 8
Woolrich has tapped the iconic Lauryn Hill to be the face of its Fall/Winter 2018 campaign, Woolrich: American Soul since 1830. Shot by photographer Jack Davidson, the pictures show Ms. Hill in the streets of Washington Heights as well as the venerable United Palace. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the classic The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Ms. Hill gives her fans an awesome rendition of one of her timeless tunes and her definition of the meaning of American Soul. Please hit up the site to check out the cool video. Lauryn Hill fans know this is not Ms. Hill’s first trip Uptown, as she shot the video for the infectious “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in Washington Heights back in 1998.
If the Trump Era has taught us anything, it is that elections matter. Elections have consequences. With that said, make sure you exercise your rights as a citizen. The primary election will be held on Thursday, September 13, and will decide the offices of Governor, Attorney General, as well as seats in the state legislature. In Northern Manhattan races for the state legislature, voters will decide on the Senate seats in Districts 30 and 31, as well as the Assembly seats in Districts 70, 71 and 72. In District 30, which includes Harlem, East Harlem and parts of the Upper West Side, incumbent Senator Brian Benjamin is opposed by LaShawn Henry on the Democratic ballot. Senator Marisol Alcántara, vying for re-election in District 31, will be challenged by former City Councilmember Robert Jackson, who ran against Alcántara in 2016. Carmen De La Rosa is also running for reelection to the New York State Assembly.
My wife, Eileen Fuentes, and I had the honor to be recorded for the StoryCorps project. Our conversation delved into our lives, spirituality and so much more has been added to the StoryCorps Archive. The interview is now housed in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Hit up the site to check it out.
By the time you read this, it may be to late but hopefully you got to attend A Toast to Fort Tryon Park on Wednesday, September 12. A Toast to Fort Tryon Park is an annual cocktail fundraiser for Fort Tryon Parks’s upkeep and public programs.
