UC Recap – November 28th – December 3rd

November 28th – December 3rd

The Uptown Collective has teamed up with VIBE Viva and Titos Handmade Vodka for The Uptown Flavor Festival, which is going down early next year. Trust me folks, this is going to be LIT. While we can’t say much right now, we are currently accepting video submissions from those who eat, sleep and breathe the art of concocting the perfect cocktail. Hit up the site for more info.

Professor and author Emily Raboteau takes us back to the height of the Great Migration for a young Black girl’s view of the Harlem of that era. Uptown nail artist Ami V has been killing the nail art game for quite some time now. Jessica Moulite of Fusion came Uptown recently to talk to Ami about her work.

We need to see more of this. Tanay Warerkar of Curbed NY reported on a new East Harlem development that will have 400 affordable apartments. Shout out to the homie Peter Cooper for his simply beautiful photo essay in Salon properly entitled The Beauty of Black Joy. We could all use a little more spirituality in our lives. This past Sunday we debuted a new column by new school pastor, Rich Perez, of the Christ Crucified Fellowship Church.

You NEED to see the film 13th. In fact, now that we are on the precipice of the Trump Era, this movie is more important than ever. Directed by celebrated filmmaker Ava Duvernay, 13th takes an unflinching look at mass incarceration in the United States and posits that slavery never ended in America, it merely mutated. Please make sure you come out to the beloved Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center (3940 Broadway) on Thursday, December 8th at 6 p.m. to catch one of the most important films of this year. The event is free but RSVP is required.

Listen up folks; NoMAA has put out the call for submissions for the 2017 Uptown Arts Stroll Poster Contest. This is a big deal for artists that make Uptown their home. Not only will you get your work in fronts of untold numbers of your Uptown peers but you will also receive a $750 honorarium. That’s right so make sure you bring your A Game and start submitting. You have until Friday, February 24th, 2017.
