Best Online Resources

When it comes to parenting, there isn’t one perfect guidebook to help us through some of the rough spots. Should I breastfeed? What is the best method to get them to sleep? How can I get them to eat more greens? Fortunately, however, the Internet does come kind of close in providing a wealth of resources from which to glean insight. There are as many options as there are ways to parent.
Here are some of what we consider the best online resources for parents in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx.
Groups and Likes
Facebook is one of the go-to sources for just about everything these days. For many, it is ‘the’ place to visit if you want to catch up with friends and family, and even make a few new connections. Groups are the best way for parents to get started. There are some very popular ones for young moms, such as the Mamis Unite, Uptown Kids, and Inwood Community Group. Of course, if you can’t find a support group or page for your interests or concerns, feel free to start your own. You’ll just need a handful of parents. Once you have a core group, ask them to share the page among their friends and before you know it, the network will expand to include more locals.

Pinning to Learn
Pinterest has tutorials on everything – handwriting, reading lists, recipes, arts and craft projects to do with the kids, arts and crafts projects for the home. You name it, they’ve got it. There are some great Pinners in our community as well, with great activity ideas and shots of our communities. They list great, local places for families to visit.

It’s the world at your fingertips in 140 characters or less. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but believe us, there is a lot going on in the Twitterverse. If there’s one resource time-strapped parents should be especially mindful of, it’s Twitter and the many great local accounts with their fingers on the pulse of Uptown and the Bronx. The Mommy’s Mingle is a Bronx Meetup for moms in the borough looking to meet other like-minded parents. BronxMama is a lifestyle website with everything from fashion ideas, activities and reviews. As for Uptown, the Uptown Girls NYC are quickly becoming the source for young women – and mothers – with their stories on everything from hair to astrology. AutismWonderland is another favorite, and it’s not just for parents of children with autism.

Blogs
There are more blogs, it seems sometimes, than there are parents. As with all accounts or resources, each blog is meant to be appraised for what it is: one person’s opinion or point of view. One blog may not be the right fit for you. Oftentimes, some of the same groups you find on Facebook and Twitter have some amazing blog communities. To find which works for you, look for that blog’s specific features, the kinds of activities and events it offers, and the real-life stories listed. If you can’t find one that feels or sounds like your style of parenting, then why not start your own? This is especially true for Spanish-speaking parents, who can too often miss out on these forums. Wordpress.com and Blogger.com offer the best and easiest content management systems (CMS) for bloggers.
