April 20 – April 25
The proverbial Uptown Love that we are always talking about was in full effect at the Onward And Upward Benefit shindig that was held at District 12 on April 20th. We as a community came together to support the wonderful work of the Up Theater Company and had a damn good time. Attendees were treated to a sneak peak of Epic Poetry, which opens at the Hebrew Tabernacle on April 29th as well as a raffle and auction that boasted some serious prizes. A shout out is in order to District 12 for the delectable fare and the outstanding service. I cannot overstate how proud I am to have been given the Upstanding Person of the Year Award. I see it as vindication of our work as well as fuel to keep spreading and preaching the Uptown gospel.
In the latest episode of the Translators Podcast, Mike Diaz and Jaime Fernandez talk to actor Dominic Colon about his start in the theater, the great advice he received from rapper 50 Cent, and his role in an upcoming film starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
The Mark Miller Gallery is pleased to present Frida Kahlo’s New York an exhibition by award-winning cartoonist and illustrator Felipe Galindo (Feggo), from May 7th through June 7th, 2015. Frida Kahlo’s New York is inspired by Kahlo’s five visits to New York City in the 1930’s and 1940’s, and presents whimsical narratives featuring Kahlo in New York City, and scenes that imagine the impact that the Big Apple might have had on Frida’s art and life. Local artist, Andrea Arroyo, is the co-founder and curator of Tribute to the Disappeared, which is an art project in honor of the disappeared in Mexico. It is homage to the 43 missing students in Ayotzinapa and the women of Juarez as well as all the victims of violence and injustice around the globe.
Our Throwback Thursdays post takes us back the dark days of the Depression when a young girl claimed to have caught a glimpse of the Virgin Mary. Cole Thompson of My Inwood provides the compelling narrative of the Dyckman Street Madonna.
