The Uptown Collective – The Recap 6-2 to 6-7

By Led Black
June 2 – June 7
Last Independence Day; the Nutcracker Films crew was on hand in the Dyckman area to capture and document the magic and moxie of the 4th of July celebrations Uptown. The result is The Incredibly Spectacular Dyckman Fireworks Co., which is a beautifully photographed film that delivers everything the title promises, while also painting a patriotic portrait of a microcosm of ethnic-American pride that is unique in it’s own right.
The film will be released online on Monday, June 23rd but you have 2 chances to catch it before then. The first is the world premiere of the film, which will take place on Monday, June 16th at District 12 (4892 Broadway). The event is free but please RSVP via Facebook. Secondly, we are blessed to have our theatrical premiere at the venerable United Palace (4140 Broadway) at the sixth installment of the Sunday Movies at the Palace with Lin-Manuel Miranda series. Our short will debut prior to the feature film, Manhattan. Tickets are $10 online and $15 at the door. Much love goes out to our sponsor for the events, The Dyckman Beer Company.
ABC News came Uptown recently to highlight the ballroom dancing program at PS 48 on 186th Street. The kids, mostly 10 and 11 years old, learn much more than just the waltz and the fox trot but the classes impart etiquette, elegance and higher self-esteem. Curbed NY was also just in the neighborhood to showcase the priciest townhouse in Washington Heights. The beautifully maintained brownstone boasts original carved wood moldings and paneling as well as a pretty sweet private garden. It could all be yours for a cool $2.5 Million.
The uber popular singer Reyna, of MTV’s Washington Heights fame, released a new video for the catchy tune, What I Want. We also featured a new one from Cakes entitled Plug Life. The prolific Jose Alfonseca of Lozer Films shot both of the videos. Our financial correspondent, Fabian Baez, penned an excellent piece on the student loan crisis.
On June 16th, the good folks of the People’s Theatre Project storm the United Palace for one heck of a theatrical shindig. This one-night only event will celebrate what is possible when neighbors unite for creative action. All tickets purchased at PeoplesTheatreProject.org will be just $5 when using the online discount code: StormTheUC.
